GM had a few gaps in pricing between models in the 20s. They had Chevrolet, Oakland, Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac. The idea was one could progress up the ladder as finances allowed. However, there was a big gap between Chevrolet and Oakland, and an even bigger gap between Oldsmobile and Buick. To fill in the gaps, Buick created the Marquette, Cadillac created La Salle, Oldsmobile the Viking, and Oakland the Pontiac. These makes, Marquette, La Salle, Viking, and Pontiac were the companion makes.
