Like wearing a rain jacket, a maroon one from Eastern Mtn Spots and a blue one from LL Bean, both backpacking lightweight and breathable, when the temp is 65° or under. Not so fond of sweating from the inside out. Must share the time was stricken w/ hypothermia before while raining w/the temp 58°. Was in the forest wilderness 12 mi from my car. My sweat was cooled too fast by the mtn wind. The heater in my car was set on high during the drive home. Was shivering (Stage 1) w/my teeth rattling all the way home. After changing clothes at home still felt cold for an hour.
BTW in winter, solo hikers are often found naked in the snow. The body creates a final rush of heat, one's mind is deranged, they feel too hot suddenly, and take layer after layer of clothes off in the snow. W/no hiking partner to stop them and tell them "What are you DOING?" Happens by the 100's. Was a hiking group leader for decades. When you speak to a hiker who has Stage 1 or Stage 2 hypothermia they just stare at you for the longest time before their motor functions kick in and speak back. Have seen it a lot. Get them to jog for a minute, if they can, best to turn around and get them outta there. Four season mtn hiking and hiking in the the rain does have risks. Mtns are so unforgiving.
Yesterday was a work on my remodelling day. Same as today. Happy trails!

9.03 miles 18,502 steps 154 minutes 58-61F 84% RH Occasional drizzle
A very fallish day, with multiple layers of dark swirling clouds.
MS - Wish I could sit around a fireplace and listen to some of your hiking experiences in the mountains. Solo hiking especially off season, is not for amateurs. Jacket here is an Outdoor Research Helium II
reb - Sounds like a great trip!

Know Outdoor Research products from years of hiking. Been hiking The Whites since 1971. Except for the wild times living and hiking on the West Coast. They have lots of 14,000' mtns that were enjoyed by me. Also hike in WY & MT. Snow at the high elevation in July. Can remember driving my RV in Kings Canyon, CA in early July with the snow depth at the roof line. Gather the main road in had been plowed all winter. The best stories ever read were from the difficult to find bool, "Smoke From A Thousand Campfires" written by Paul Dorethy. He was the first Fish & Game Warden in northern NH after WWII. The funnest book in hiking is, "A Walk In The Woods" by Bill Bryson. Many long distance hikers carry this book to read 3 & 4x on their journey along the A. T. Hilarious reading!

Had remodelling to continue. No hike yesterday. Read all sorts of articles every Sept on how many towns & cities burn Benedict Arnold In Effigy. New England never forgets a traitor.

No walking the past two days. Should be back at it tomorrow.
MS - Thanks for the Benedict Arnold pic. Did you notice his left leg is missing. That's the leg that was shot in the Battle of Quebec, and shot again in the Battle of Saratoga (plus his horse fell on it). So the good people or CT "pardon" his left leg as a tribute to his bravery in battle, but burn the rest of him in effigy for his treason. My direct ancestors were farmers in Windham, CT at the time of the Revolution. Great x 5 grandfather killed in Battle of White Plains, NY, and his son, grandfather x 4 served in the Connecticut Line until the end of the war.

Love the historical account and read. Up here no one remembers B. Arnold. It's an agricultural area all rural, with the big town of Littleton expanding to welcome in the 21 century w/ some Big Box store and national chains. Do miss the selection of goods and competitive prices the city has to offer. Boston, Milwaukee, and LA were my home at one time. Yet there is nothing finer and healthier than country living.
One acre of trees provides the amount of oxygen consumed by 18 people annually. One acre of trees produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year. One acre of trees removes up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Trees lower air temp by evaporating water in their leaves. These days am for more trees animals, and birds w/ less people. It's "The good life."
A mere 1.8 mi hike, 484 ft ascent, and superb views of the Presidentials.

Glad to get the walk in today. The remnants of Hurricane Florence are about 40 miles south of here, but we'll probably only get a half inch or so or rain. Feel sorry for all those folks in the Carolinas, who'll be recovering for a very long time.
