The last two tournaments produced first time winners. Last week, at Torey Pines, once known as the , a Frenchman became the first of his nationality to win on the PGA tour. The previous week, just outside Palm Beach at what used to be known as The Bob Hope Desert Classic, an amateur won the tournament. He dropped out of college and is now playing on the tour.
This week they headed up the coast to play the Pebble Beach Pro Am, once known as The Crosby. I watched the third round and saw the stunning performance by Wyndham Clark, who shot a course record 12 under, 60 on Saturday to vault into the lead by 2 strokes. Clark's front nine was particularly amazing -- he shot an 8 under, 28 that included 2 eagle 2s and 4 birdies to go with 3 pars. He holed nearly 200 feet of putts and that stat doesn't include one he rolled in from over 20 feet away from the fringe to save his only bogey of the day.
The weather along most of the California coast turned dreadful Saturday afternoon after the round concluded and was unplayable on Sunday. The 4th round was initially postponed until this morning but last night, citing an abundance of caution, the PGA cancelled the 4th round.
So that decision gave Clark the win! This was the second of 8 "Signature Events" of the year. That brings a bigger purse, a top field, and double end of the year tournament points.
