The director stopped by and I asked her about the kits and she said they're about $160 a pop.
I had other good news for them. My employer's charitable foundation gave me a volunteerism award for the 4th quarter of 2017, nominated by one of my buddies for all my platelet donations, and donated $500 to Community Blood in my name. That's in addition to the $100 they donate every time I rack up 10 hours of service to Community. I don't get any tax benefit, just a certificate of recognition, but a bit of pride that because of my platelet donations the blood center is getting some cash too. I had asked before about the disposables and all they knew was they were NOT cheap! I’d had one time where they messed up the kit setting it up before they even poked me! And CONGRATULATIONS on the attaboy!

Slow day today, decided to go in. I only had one scheduled donation in April, and I decided it was a slow afternoon. Got the idea when I went out to eat lunch. Decided to go to the Italian place across the street from the blood bank, and figured I just as well donate while I was in the neighborhood. I want to give on my birthday in thirteen days.
I commented on your $160 figure to Ricky (assistant manager of the Neighborhood Donor Center I go to) and he gave me another figure: All the stuff that goes into a platelet donation costs $500.
Ricky did my phlebotomy today and I didn’t have my usual blurry vision. Maybe because I took my blood pressure medicine last night instead of in the morning. Probably will take today’s dose when I get home. I wanted to spread out the dosing as much as possible.

Tried to update the "Blood Donation" thread with the latest donor arm selfie. Got a message stating we used all the space for uploaded pictures. Though, when I looked at the picture (which is on Facebook, Zuck hasn't run out of space yet!) it has my iPad in it open to GBO!

I got my stuffed plush platelet today. It's light yellow, about the color of a bag of juicy golden platelets.
In the department of "nasty infections that I have had" I also got C. diff (purple) and MRSA (brown). A year ago, I got out of the hospital after spending nearly a month there for a MRSA infection. Wasn't able to donate until the 16th of June last year!

Draw, return, spin, spin, rinseback complete, the cookies go in! I'm also doing one next Wednesday. It's my birthday, but I'm going to give Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center the present!

Another rainy day in New York City. And here in New Jersey too. Happy hUMp Day!
Have to work in the office today, then another platelet donation after work.
Happy Birthday, Sneakers! My birthday is around Thanksgiving time so I usually make a platelet donation the day after Thanksgiving as my gift to them.

About a third done with a platelet triple. Took my donor arm selfie and posted it on Facebook. My housemates are going to take me out for supper tonight. I get to pick where. I think LongHorn Steakhouse but I could shock them and say Bombshells (a restaurant and sports bar in Houston with skimpily clad waitresses and decor of military materiel). Got to live a little at 63! I have been there before!

The birthday donation in living color: And in a related topic, Terumo (TRUMY), the maker of over half of the world's apheresis machines, had their stock go up over 5% today. Best performer in my taxable brokerage account!

Got in my 6th triple platelet of the year Wednesday night. The blood tech insisted on using my left arm even though I told him 2 weeks prior the scar tissue clogged the needle and the lady that got me on the 11th had to take it from the right.
Went out with my wife to pick up Jersey Mike's subs for dinner. I lucked out and got the last rosemary parmesan loaf in the shop for my classic Italian sub. Win!

Got a text from Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center this morning. My platelets were on the way to a hospital (they didn't say which one of the many that get products from The Blood Center). First donation where I got a message from them.

Late last week I received in the mail a $40 Target gift card from Community Blood Services. If was a promotional gift for making at least 4 platelet donations within the first quarter of the year. Of course it went straight to the wifey.

I've been getting persistent messages from New York Blood Center wanting platelets. Community Blood is my normal donor agency. NYBC is so desperate for platelets that through May 11 they're giving 100 bonus points in their program. I decided to go to NYBC Saturday & maximize my points:
From the NYBC Donor Advantage page:
Platelet Donations
**EARN MORE POINTS EFFECTIVE JUNE 1, 2016**
PLATELET POINTS
Single Platelet Donation 125
Additional points for:
- Triple platelet 125 - Double platelet/red cell 75 - Double platelet/plasma 75 - Double platelet 50 - Platelet/plasma 50 - Platelet/red cell 50 100 Additional Points for Platelet donations made on Saturday, Sunday and Monday 50 Additional Points for Platelet donations made on Friday So a Triple Platelet tomorrow would be 125 (base platelet) + 125 (triple platelet) + 100 (Saturday) + 100 (critical need bonus) = 450 points.
