Another death, of a former Cincinnati mayor who was not exactly a sterling character:
'Jerry Springer, a broadcaster, author, politician, journalist, actor, lawyer and host of a daytime show so outrageous he once apologized by saying it "ruined the culture," died today [April 27] at age 79 in his suburban Chicago home after a brief illness, according to a statement from his family.
Though he had a lot of high-profile jobs over his lifetime – including mayor of Cincinnati – Springer was best known as host of The Jerry Springer Show, a syndicated TV program which lasted for 27 years, featuring provocatively sensational topics and confrontations among the guests, sometimes degenerating into fistfights.'

Here are the two Gordon Lightfoot songs I mentioned earlier as "incomporable."
First -- "Beatiful":
The music, the chord progression is magical, the lyrics incredible:
"I think that I was made for you And you were made for me."
This is the song I would have sung to my wife on our wedding day, had I the voice chops to pull it off without her laughing.
And -- "If You Could Read My Mind""
I have been entranced by this song, and its images of "a ghost in a wishing well" and a hero from "a paperback novel, the kind that drugstores sell" ever since first hearing it in high school. One of my college buddies had a list of what he called "horny sweet songs" and I'm pretty sure this was on it. Its romantic images really belie the fact that it was composed as a breakup song, which was only apparent in the closing lyrics "I don't know where we went wrong, but the feeling's gone and we just can't get it back."
Never mind that "legend from the Chippewa on down". Remember Gordon Lightfoot for these songs.

This meme fits nicely into this topic; it's practically a eulogy:

Vida Blue July 28, 1949 - May 6, 2023
I heard about this the other day and was reminded by one of my partners today on the golf course. A/P's headline states, Vida Blue, led Oakland to 3 World Series titles, dies at 73.
At the link, it's obvious that Blue never made the HOF b/c he had drug issues. Back then, in the 80s, drug use was misunderstood. It's terrible that Vida was never inducted. Clearly, unlike the steroid users, his substance abuse was not ever beneficial to his on field performance.

Jim Brown February 17, 1936 - May 18, 2023
They broke into coverage of the PGA Championship to report this sad news. Cleveland.com's headline states, Jim Brown, Cleveland Browns and NFL legend, dies at 87. . I remember Brown's performance in the 1964 NFL title game in which the Browns defeated the Baltimore Colts. He was amazing. He retired as the then leading all time NFL rusher after only 9 seasons. He went out on top, though a strong case can be made the then and eventually infamous Browns' owner, Art Model, pushed Brown out, refusing to permit Brown to continue to participate in the filming of The Dirty Dozen, a movie in which Brown had a staring role. Filming had been delayed by weather but Model insisted that Brown report to training camp. It's doubtful that Brown required any training.
In addition to a film career, Brown was also involved in the civil rights movement and I remember that he became involved in controversial Ohio State star Marice Clarett's saga.
Here's a highlight video from Brown's NFL career with the Browns:

Tina Turner, 83, superstar pop and soul singer, died yesterday (May 24) at her home in Küsnacht, Switerland, her home since 2013. She had been suffering from cancer, strokes and kidney failure.
Born Anna Mae Bullock in rural Tennessee to a sharecropping family, she sung in the church choir but also had a turbulent childhood. Left first by her mother then her father, Anna and her sister were ultimately was raised by her grandmother until she died when Anna was in her teens. Ending up in St Louis, the two girls frequented nightclubs, where Anna saw Ike Turner’s band, and by the 1960s they were married, with Anna renamed Tina (reportedly by Ike without her prior permission). Starting in the mid 1960s, Ike and Tina Turner had a string of hits such as their uptempo version of “Proud Mary”.
But Ike was abusive and fell into a cocaine habit. In 1975, Tina divorced Ike and launched her solo career. Her gravely voice and uninhibited vocals led her being dubbed the “Queen of Rock and Roll”. Her hits continued into the 2000s. For me, her most memorable hit from this period was her cynical hit “What’s Love Got to Do with It?”
Turner won eight Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once with Ike and again as a solo artist. She inspired many younger female African-American artists, including Beyonce, Janet Jackson and Rihanna.
Here is Tina, live with Ike singing “Proud Mary,” first “nice and easy” then “rough”.
And here is “What’s Love Got to Do with It”:
Like many other performers, Tina Turner was a larger than life personality who seemed to be searching for inner peace. Tina Turner, RIP.

Ted Kaczynski Don't know or care - June 10, 2023
I saw a report on a news show that the infamous Unabomber had finally died in prison today. He deserved the death penalty but made it to 81. I won't dignify his life or death with further comment, except to say:
Good riddance.

Daniel EllsbergApril 7, 1931 - June 16, 2023 ABC News' headline reads:
Daniel Ellsberg, Pentagon Papers whistleblower, dead at 92
ABC also reports that the NYT published the leaked items but, I believe, that happened only after the Washington Post printed them before the SCOTUS decision. Ellsberg went to The Post because the NYT was dragging its feet on publication.

Bob Barker, 99, TV personality, died Saturday, August 26 of natural causes.
Bark was best known for his long run as host of The Price Is Right, a show that he emceed from its revival in 1972, (it originated in the 1950s) until he turned it over to Drew Carey in 2007. During that time, he seemed to be virtually ageless (other letting his hair go gray).
Prior to Price he emceed the show Truth or Consequences for 18 years. At the time producer Ralph Edwards tapped him for that role, Barker was working various radio and TC jobs in Palm beach, Florida. His other TV work including hosting the Pillsbury Bake-Off for 16 years, the Tournament of Roses Parade for 19 years, and the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. He stopped hosting the beauty pagents when he learned o0f plans for the contestants to model furs during the swimsuit competition. Barker was a vegetarian and an outspoken animal rights activist, and he always signed off his Price shows by urging his audience to have their pets spayed or neutered (Drew Carey maintains that tradition).
Barker gained a new set of fans when he did a feature role in the movie "Happy Gilmore," in which he made use of his black belt in karate by clobbering star Adam Sandler. As a result, "GenerationY" came to lvoe the show for its "unpretentious squareness."
Indeed, Bob Barker was a throwback to an earlier, more genial age. RIP.
