Hinckley, Minnesota
On September 1, 1894 Hinckley and five other towns were totally destroyed by the Great Hinckley Fire. Over 300 square miles of white pine forests were burned in an explosively fast moving fire that lasted only 4 hours. It had been a hot and dry September and there had been many small fires but on this day a temperature inversion occurred and a downdraft of cooler air fanned 2 of these small fires which joined in a vortex which overran everything in its path. Temperatures reached over 2000 degrees and flames could be seen in Iowa over 500 miles away. A young worker at one of the lumber plants outside of town saw what was happening and ran to the fire bell and rang it until the fire roared through the camp and taking his life. This gave time for people to catch trains out of town just as the fire arrived. Hundreds were saved by the trainmen - some who stayed at the controls despite suffering bad burns. 248 of the more than 400 plus people killed were in Hinckley and are buried in a mass grave at the Lutheran cemetery as most could not be identified.
Personal note: This is part of my family history - my great great grandfather and most of his family were aboard the last train out of town but a brother and part of his family didn't make it out. When first told about it I thought it sounded like a movie with the miraculous last second escapes but the reality of it was these things and more happened. My G G grandfathers nephew actually somehow survived the fire while everyone around him died. He and his one surviving sister wrote a book about all that happened.
