Kaskaskia, Illinois
The first capital for the State of Illinois was in Kaskaskia. The town was later washed away on several occasions by Mississippi River floods. The main channel of the Mississippi River later changed course during a flood, leaving what is left of the town as the only town in Illinois that is on the west side of the Mississippi River.

Known as the "Hub City" - The first coast to coast road, the Lincoln Highway went through the town and was crossed by US-51, one of the first north-south country wide highways. Now I-39 and I-88 cross here. Also the Burlington Route Railroad (now BNSF) and the Chicago and Northwest Railroad (now Union Pacific) crossed near the center of town. The city built the Rochelle Railroad Park - covered raised platform and small shop - where you can see several trains in a short period of time on these two major mainlines.
