General Colin L. Powell April 5, 1937 – October 18, 2021
According to CNN: Powell was 84. He was fully vaccinated against COVID19, apparently dying due to breakthrough COVID.
This news is still breaking as I type. CNN is reporting that Powell's wife also contracted COVID despite having been vaccinated, but she responded well to treatment. Powell apparently was older than his spouse and suffered from other conditions, including Parkinson's, which they speculate may have left him more vulnerable to breakthrough COVID.

It turns out that Gen. Powell had blood cancer and that either the cancer or it's treatment likely destroyed the antibodies that the vaccine would have generated to protect Powell from the virus. So it would be more accurate had the reports stated that Powell died from complications due to blood cancer.

Bob Dole July 23, 1923 -- December 5, 2021
The Elizabeth Dole Foundation's Twitter account announced today: Dole was 98. Earlier this year, it was reported that Dole had stage 4 cancer. From Fox News: In my mind, Dole's political work was overshadowed by this side hustle that he added sometime after his loss to Bill Clinton in '96:

Robert Dole, 98, former US Senator and candidate for President, passed away in his sleep Sunday, December 5.
Born and raised in rural Kansas, Dole went into the Army during World War II as did so many of the Greatest Generation. Encountering a German machine gun in Italy in 1945, he came home with a Bronze Star and injuries which ultimately included the loss of use of his right arm and partial numbness in the left arm.
Obtaining a law degree, Dole went into politics and after a series of other offices at the state and local level and the US House, was elected to the Senate, serving 2 stints as Majority Leader, the last ending in 1996 for his Presidential run. Along the way, he ran for Vice-President on Gerald Ford's Presidential ticket in 1976. He ran for the GOP nomination for President in 1980, 1988 and successfully in 1996 -- but losing decisively in the general election to Bill Clinton. (I voted for Dole on both his Presidential tickets. But in the 1988 Super Tuesday primary, I voted for George Bush Sr over Dole, after reading both their campaign biographies. Both were good men and good conservatives, but Bush had a clearer vision).
I remember his 1996 campaigning as awkward, verging on a train wreck. But accolades that have poured in attest that when he wasn't scripted, he was warm, funny, authentic, a great off-the-cuff speaker. And his character, forged in his wartime service, was never in question. He was respected on both sides of the political aisle, getting commendations from people as varied as Clinton and Donald Trump (uncharacteristically, perhaps because Dole was the only former GOP nominee to endorse Trump).
Bob Dole, the last of a dying breed of politicians. RIP.

Good catch, SUVFan!
Michael Nesmith was of course one of 4 members of The Monkees, a group put together for the primetime TV series of the same name from 1966 to 1968.
The other members were Davy Jones (died 2012), Peter Tork (real name Peter Thorkelson, died 2019) and Mickey Dolenz, the last surviving member.

John Madden April 10, 1936 -- December 28, 2021
According to NFL.com:Madden "was the only man to call the Super Bowl for four networks and he also developed a multibillion-dollar video game franchise and starred in Miller Lite commercials," according to the Hollywood Reporter. I remember Madden's antics as the Coach of the Oakland Raiders well. And I was a fan of Madden the broadcaster, learning a lot of what I know about the game from listening to him. I also remember not just his hilarious beer commercials noted by the Hollywood Reporter piece, but also ones he did for McDonalds that featured Madden using his telestrator to draw up exactly how they fulfilled his order:

Just heard about John Madden. I remember he hated flying, so he had a specially fitted out bus to take him to all the games he called. He was a character.

Harry Reid, 82, former US Senator from Nevada and Senate Majority Leader, passed away today, Tuesday, December 28, of pancreatic cancer.
As the leader of the Senate Democrats from 2007 to 2015 and Majority Leader , Reid shepherded the Affordable Care Act, aka "Obamacare," through the Senate. Reid was also instrumental in changing Senate rules in 2013 to allow Barack Obama's judicial nominees to be confirmed without being filibustered, a rule the GOP later used to get Trump's judicial nominees confirmed.

Betty White, 99, seemingly immortal actress whose career spanned 75 years, died Friday, December 31, less than 3 weeks before her 100th birthday on January 17.
In her long career, her 2 most famous roles were as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s, and on the Golden Girls opposite Rue McClanahan, Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty in the 1980s.
White was nominated for 23 Emmy awards and won six. She became the oldest nominee in 2012, at the age of 90.
She started her long career on radio, then moved to television. She hosted a talk show, the Betty White Show, in the 1950s, then became a game show regular in the 1960s. I first encountered her on Password, whose host, Allen Ludden, became her third husband.
In later years, she appeared for a stint on the soap opera The Bold and The Beautiful in the 2000s. She hosted Saturday Night Live in 2010, the oldest SNL host ever. In recent years it seemed she was everywhere and never slowed down, like the Energizer Bunny.
To me, her most memorable role was as Sue Ann Nivens, who hosted a TV show, the "Happy Homemaker" at the TV station where Tyler's character, Mary Richards, worked. Sue Ann Nivens was a syrupy saccharinely sweet character who could be nasty when the cameras were not rolling. A short clip that samples her personality is below.

Speaking of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, I checked up on the other surviving cast member and found he had already passed:
Gavin MacLeod, 90, veteran TV actor, died on Saturday, May 29.
After appearing on various TV shows during the 1960s (such as a memorable guest role on Hogan's Heroes as a missile designer), MacLeod landed the role of news writer Murray L slaughter on MTM, frequently poking wisecracks at pompous news anchor Ted Baxter (played by Ted White). He had initially auditioned for the role of short-tempered news director Lou Grant, but realized he was not right for that role, which was ultimately given to Ed Asner.
After MTM, MacLeod landed the starring role of cruise ship captain Merrill Stubing in The Love Boat, which lasted 11 seasons. Later, he appeared in Touched by An Angel, JAG and The King of Queens.
Besides Hogan's Heroes, his early TV credits included Hawaii Five-O, The Dick Van Dyke Show and a run on McHale's Navy as Seaman Joseph "Happy" Haines. He also had movie credits in Kelly's Heroes, The Sand Pebbles and The Sword of Ali Baba. (Kelly's Heroes, one of my favorite comedy movies, a kind of WWII version of M*A*S*H, had MacLeod in a bit character role as the tank driver Moriarty, under the very wierd tank commander Oddball, played by Kiefer Donald Sutherland).
In this year 2021, the last 4 cast members of of MTM passed: Cloris Leachmann, MacLeod, Ed Asner and finally, Betty White.

"under the very wierd tank commander Oddball, played by Kiefer Sutherland)."
It was actually Kieffer's dad, Donald Sutherland, who was in Kelly's Heroes.
