On this date in 1958, ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM by THE EVERLY BROTHERS went to No. 1 on the US Billboard Chart (May 6th 1958)
NOTE: The video here is from a Swedish TV show broadcast in 1959, when Cadence producer Archie Bleyer brought his top three acts to Europe on a promotional tour. The show saw a line-up of Andy Williams, the Everly Brothers and the Chordettes. I've upscaled and colorized the clip from the original black and white film.
Written by Boudleaux Bryant of the husband and wife songwriting team Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, and published in 1958, ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM was made famous by the Everly Brothers.
Felice and Boudleaux Bryant penned many huge hits for the Everly Brothers and other artists, including "Bye, Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "Bird Dog," "Devoted to You," "Hey Joe," "Love Hurts," "Raining In My Heart," and "Rocky Top."
"I remember hearing 'All I Have To Do Is Dream' on an acetate with Boudleaux's version on it," recalled Phil Everly , "and I said, at the time, they could have put Boudleaux's out and it would have been a hit."
"It's just a great, great song. It's beautiful. Boudleaux was the main man who wrote all the great songs for us, and we love him."
Chet Atkins played tremolo-style guitar chords on the song, providing an interesting musical backing to the Everly Brothers' unique vocal harmonies.
According to Billboard magazine, the song took just 15 minutes to write.
Boudleaux was literally the man of Felice's dreams. When she first met him, Boudleaux was playing a gig with his jazz band at the Sherwood Hotel in Milwaukee, where Felice was working as an elevator operator.
But she saw him years earlier - in a dream when she was 8 years old.
She told Country Music People in 1981: "When I was eight years old, I dreamt of this man. He and I were dancing to 'our song,' and I remembered this man's face. So when I saw Boudleaux I recognized him! I don't know if you can call it love at first sight or 'My god, you friend, I was wondering when you'd come along.' But I just clung on to him. He didn't know who the hell I was, but somehow I knew who he was."
The song topped the UK's New Musical Express chart in June 1958, remaining there for seven weeks, and is ranked No. 141 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

So romantic...
As the sun set on the 1950s, a young Canadian singer-songwriter named PAUL ANKA made waves with his tender and evocative ballad, PUT YOUR HEAD ON MY SHOULDER. Released in 1959, the song captured the hearts of listeners, becoming a defining anthem of love and longing for a generation. More than six decades later, it continues to enchant new audiences with its timeless charm.
Paul Anka, a gifted songwriter and performer, was no stranger to the world of dance parties. However, he typically found himself on stage rather than on the dance floor. Reflecting on those experiences, Paul recalled, "When I was playing record hops, I noticed that everybody's head was on somebody else's shoulder. I had never heard a song that expressed that feeling, so one night I went back to my hotel room and wrote 'Put Your Head On My Shoulder.'"
Anka's keen observation inspired him to create a song that would become a classic. Recorded in August 1958 and released as a single by ABC-Paramount a year later, "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" featured the lush arrangements and conducting of Don Costa, whose talents perfectly complemented Anka's heartfelt lyrics and emotive vocals.
For many, the song encapsulated the excitement and anticipation of weekend romances. Paul himself described the sentiment, saying, "Put your head on my shoulder - that was your objective that weekend. To get her to get the head on the shoulder, maybe get a kiss and get your hand in her blouse. All that I understood." This honest and relatable portrayal of youthful desire struck a chord with listeners, propelling the track to the top of the charts.
Over the years, "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" has been covered and reimagined by numerous artists, showcasing the song's enduring appeal. From soulful renditions to modern electronic interpretations, the heartfelt ballad continues to connect with music lovers of all ages.
