With the decade ending today, I came across an interesting piece that actually rates the decade's offerings from 1 to 5,279. That's an amazing undertaking! I saw only three of the top 50 (my rating per this topic's instructions follow each item): (26) The Social Network -- 8/10 (42) John Wick -- 7.5/10 (49) The Irishman -- 2/10 ( see my review from November) Obviously the folks who put together the list and I have different tastes!

This year's Oscar crop did not motivate me to go to the theatre and I have not been watching movies on TV. Then the other day, a TNT listing caught my eye. That rating follows.

Jack Reacher (2012) -- 6/10
I've read a lot of the books and know that Reacher is about 6'5". So casting 5'7" Tom Cruise in that role was not exactly believable. Cruise delivered most of the lines well enough but there were several scenes he just couldn't pull off. Such as when he's walking through a crowded bar, towering over everyone. It's like they must have issued a casting call limiting the work to people under 5 feet tall!
They needed to cast as Reacher a guy like the late Jack Palance, who won the best supporting actor Oscar for his portrayal of Curly in City Slickers. He'd be too old for the role now, but 6'4" Clint Eastwood could have pulled it off or, maybe 6'4" Ben Affleck? If he bulked up the way he did for American Sniper, 6'1" Bradley Cooper would be acceptable.
Another small departure from the book series that cost a full point deduct was a scene where Reacher bought new clothes. Though they stayed with his single outfit, traveling only with a toothbrush at most routine, as he was exiting a store after changing into his new duds, they had Cruise toss the outfit he was retiring into a huge "good will" box. AFAIK, that's never happened in a Reacher novel. By the time he discarded them, Reacher's clothes would always be filthy and likely damaged and bloodstained and, though tied in a plastic bag, Reacher wouldn't be the type to "give away" unsuitable gear. Plus, the stores Reacher would shop at wouldn't have huge good will bins hanging around. Reacher always tosses his retired outfits into a trash receptacle, usually in the store fitting room. It's a huge whiff just to make a PC statement. Frankly, instead of paying for product placement (if they did), I'd think Goodwill would object. Do they realize that's promoting exactly what they don't want in their drop boxes?
