Sneakers, I agree with your housemate. I never buy cheap eggs. The kind I get (and have gotten for years) are organic from a local farm. The co-ops sell them for $3.99 in bulk, meaning you load them into a carton yourself. I prefer doing that. They also come pre-packaged for a slightly higher cost. The bulk ones are not graded by size and the prepacked ones say "large" or "extra large" but sizes can vary by season and other things. Usually they are larger than "large". I love it when I find jumbos, which is quite often. Always the same price, the way I buy them.
But $3.99 for organic eggs is low for here. Most cost more and much more than that.
Remember, you get what you pay for and you are what you eat! I don't want antibiotics, hormones or genetically modified organisms in my food or my body.
I have an iMac, too. You think there's a connection? Maybe that we like quality? However, this one was given to me refurbished by a wonderfully kind Buddy at that other place.

This week I paid $1.25 per dozen for jumbo eggs at a local supermarket (on sale), $2.50 per dozen for large eggs at a local farm, $2.00 per dozen for Jumbo eggs at Stewart's and $1.50 per dozen for large eggs at Dollar General.
The large eggs from Dollar General were closer to medium in size. They don't look, nor taste like our locally sourced eggs either.

Farmer's mkt eggs are running at around $5 a dz and l run on by. Don't notice size or color. Don't believe in that anyway. Different colors are from different chickens IMO. But l do prefer the brown deep down in my memory for some reason. LOL

Under a buc for ever at ALDI, small, but for that price ? ? ? We eat them mostly included in recipes as ingredients, so we really do not care...I eat a couple of fried eggs maybe 2wice in a year for Bkfast, no biggie for me either.

Kwik Trip stores in Minnesota regularly have eggs for .99 cents a dozen. I recently bought eggs at Aldi in Shakopee, MN (Kwik Trip was sold out) for $1.39 a dozen.

I've purchased my last 10 dozen eggs (throughout the pandemic shutdown) from a small farm market a few miles down the road but I can make it on my way to or from a ton of errands.
It's an honor system with a small fridge on the front porch (other than when they're having a larger weekend market every month or so) where you grab your eggs and slide your money through a slot in a jar. $2.75 a dozen for incredibly fresh brown eggs, ranging from large to XXL in size. They recycle the cartons -- you just return them when you purchase more.

Eggs are advertised in this week's Kroger flyer for 89¢ per dozen.
I won't be buying any. I'm very happy with the outstanding farm fresh eggs I get at the farm market for $3/dozen.
