Ben Hur 1959 Ben Hur has been released three times as a movie. The 1959 version imho tops them all. The character of Judah Ben-Hur was crafted in Lew Wallace's 1880 novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. Despite its 1880 publication date, Ben-Hur was the number one best-selling work of fiction of the 19th century in the United States. The original New York Times (11/14/1880) review described Wallace's rendering of New Testament episodes from Christ's life as "thoroughly devotional." 2. The novel Ben-Hur was a recognized source for evangelism. Wallace found his faith in Christ while writing Ben-Hur. In his 1890s lecture, "How I Came to Write Ben-Hur," Wallace revealed writing the account of Christ's life in Ben-Hur to explore his own faith, after hearing famed agnostic Robert Ingersoll question God's existence. Formerly having "no convictions about God or Christ," Wallace wrote Ben-Hur "reverentially, and frequently with awe". www.christianpost.com/news/10-essential-facts-about-the-history-of-ben-hur-168183/

Just saw the movie I can only imagine. Went to a multiplex with 22 screens, and it was only playing on 1!
It is one of those places where you select your seat before you sit down... they had only 2 seats in the upper level and a row in the "Screen is in your face" level. Only time recently that has occurred was when I went to a Star Wars Movie. Liked the song and the group Mercy Me, and the story behind the song, which is what the movie is about, was very good as well.
Hope people will take time to support Christian movies worth seeing. And this one was that.

The Original Ben Hur and The Robe are my two favorite Christian movies of all time. The Passion of the Christ and War Room are a good ones as well... Finally, I read that Gibson is making a sequel to the Passion of the Christ which will be about the Resurrection...

Always interesting how Passover is celebrated on Easter weekend with that movie, but not Easter itself.

Risen... an post Easter appropriate movie you may want to consider over the next little while.
a commentary from the old thread...
Finally picked up Risen off of itunes. I was happy with the quality of the film. Hollywood quality with none of the Hollywood revision given to other biblical movies recently, and definitely not done in the usual genre of Baptist fantasy movies.
The film definitely was made, not for mainstream Christians, but for those curious or who wonder, the open minded who continually seek God. I admit I was offended by one point in the movie in that they insisted on making the Magdalene a reformed hooker, which has no Biblical backing whatsoever, but was originally promoted by an early Pope of the Latin church, an error since apologized for by that Church. A little research would have clarified that.
Also one could be offended by that fact that the beginning and end was left off of the Lord's Prayer, ignoring God and His Kingdom, but as the movie tried not to enforce any belief but instead address wonder, I can understand that slight.
Finally, the true mystery of the movie... I am left wondering why a window in a stone wall would need two sticks made to look like window panes when obviously they served no purpose and panes were unknown. Same religious experts who mislabelled the Magdalene?
Otherwise, it is good fiction of a good concept based on Biblical truth without the usual plot twists or aftermarket doctrine thrown in. This movie is not trying to enforce a point but to simply awe and inspire. It succeeds. Worth the watch.
Oh.. and it doesn't come off as an amateurish production liked the Bible series or other evangelical endeavours.

Speaking of Risen, 2 years ago Mel Gibson announced, well teased, that he was thinking of making a sequel to the Passion called Resurrection or the like. It was recently confirmed that not only would the same actors resume their roles but that shooting would start this summer. Release has been suggested for 2019 but more likely for the Easter season of 2020.
Controversy has already begun of course, based on comments on a talk show a year or more back, that indicated time spent down in hell as spoken in the Apostle's Creed would be interpreted as actual time in another realm rather than descending into the grave. But controversy has always worked well for Gibson who profited over $600 million from the Passion. It has also been suggested that the film will try to appease evangelicals unlike the Passion, but the resulting fear is in order to do so, it will have to be more political than spiritual in nature thus taking it from what could be the ultimate biblical epic to merely another sell out.

Les Misérables known in English-speaking countries as Les Mis or Les Miz , is a sung-through musical based on the novel Les Misérables by French poet and novelist Victor Hugo. Set in early 19th-century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister's starving child. Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew after a kindly bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and a slew of characters are swept into a revolutionary period in France, where a group of young idealists make their last stand at a street barricade. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Mis%C3%A9rables_(musical)It is an amazing story of human personalizes. Love, Grace, Mercy, forgiveness and the lack of these attributes In the soul of a person. Has to be one of the 10 greatest movies ever. I also saw the stage presentation in London, NY and San Francisco
