Some Alaska Costco shoppers see ravens steal their groceries. During the last few years customers in Anchorage have seen brazen ravens swoop down for meat, vegetables, and fruit. The birds weigh up to 5 lbs, average 25" in length, w/a massive wingspan up to 49". “My parents were minding their business after a shop and made it home with one less steak!” One women wrote on Facebook. “The bird snatched it right out of the bag in the parking lot.” These ravens have graduated from fast food on the ground to pure robbery. Who knew?

Who Knew??? Each year, March 30th National Pencil Day honors the writing utensil that has done more than just teach millions the alphabet and draw straight lines. It’s also helped win wars and enabled amazing art. Hymen Lipman received the first patent for attaching an eraser to the end of a pencil on this day in 1858. Before that time, pencils and erasers existed separately. Lipman combined the two making two tools much more convenient to use. The intuitive businessman also manufactured envelopes for his stationery shop and was the first to add adhesive to the flap of envelopes.

The chief translator of the European Parliament speaks 32 languages fluently. Since 2002, the Greek translator Ioannis Ikonomou has been the chief translator of the European Parliament. With 32 languages under his belt, he merits the position. He initially moved to Brussels to be an interpreter, a valuable position in the EU capital, but after he learned all 12 official languages of the EU, he kept going and now speaks even more, like Bengali, Swahili, and Turkish. Who Knew???Manatee Appreciation Day on the Last Wednesday in March focuses the world’s attention on an herbivore with no known natural enemy. Also known as the sea cow, manatees are a vulnerable species due to their contact with humans. Boating and pollution, as well as other external forces, threaten the manatee.
These slow-moving herbivores inhabit slow rivers, canals, saltwater bays, estuaries, and coastal areas around the world. All three species of manatees are considered gentle giants, spending most of their time eating, sleeping, and traveling.

Beauty and the Beast was written to help girls accept arranged marriages. The original version of Beauty and the Beast was a 1740 story by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (in which the beast was a hideous combination of an elephant and fish). According to children's literature academic Maria Tatar, the tale was written in order to encourage girls to accept arranged marriages, "for an alliance that required effacing their own desires and submitting to the will of a monster." Who knew?
