The first TV commercial aired July 1, 1941. The L.A. Dodgers were playing the Philadelphia Phillies in New York at Ebbets Field. While the game was surely exciting on its own, those who were watching at home on the NBC owned WNBT — now WNBC — also saw another exciting historical moment: the very first TV commercial shown in the United States. As reported by WJCT News, the ad cost just $9 and lasted 9 seconds. It was disarmingly simple: Over a silhouette of the continental United States, a watch face pops up, and a voiceover says, "America runs on Bulova time." Today, of course, America runs on Dunkin'. Who knew?

National Sea Monkey Day on May 16th each year celebrates the tiny brine shrimp that swim around mail-order aquariums. Most of us have memories of waiting for our mail-order shipment of these magical creatures. The delivery usually contained the small “aquarium-like” hatching kit for them to live and grow in.
Sea Monkeys are a type of Artemia (brine shrimp). They got their name because of their monkey-tail look.
Following the popularity of the ant farms, Harold von Braunhut invented the “Sea Monkeys” and hatching kits in 1957. He did most of his advertising through comic books. He once said, “I think I bought something like 3.2 million pages of comic book advertising a year. It worked beautifully.”
These little crustaceans have made their appearances on television shows including Spin City, Roseanne, Night Court, South Park, The Simpsons, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, and Desperate Housewives.

Singapore plans to build floating suburbs. With a fast-growing population of nearly 6 million people, all of whom must cram on a mere 447 square miles—of land, Singapore needs more space than ever. And, according to a report in Hakai magazine, they're working on plans to create that space on 40 floating rafts. Each individual section would be about the size of a baseball diamond, weigh more than 7.5 metric tons, and be tethered to the seabed about 60 feet below. Who knew?

On May 17th, National Idaho Day recognizes the 43rd state to join the union.
A wave of settlement made its way into The Gem State following in the footsteps of the Corps of Discovery. Miners, traders, and missionaries made their way West into the territory of the Nez Perce, Shoshone, and Bannock peoples. On July 3, 1890, the state became the 43rd state of the United States.
The state is dominated by the Rocky Mountains range. Snake River winds its way through the rugged western border of the state carving the deepest river gorge in North America. Hells Canyon National Recreation Area provides spectacular views of the dramatic landscapes the Snake River took thousands of years to sculpt.

The stars and flashes of light you see when you rub your eyes are called "phosphenes." Rubbing your eyes a little too hard might leave you seeing stars — which are actually phosphenes, according to Troy Bedinghaus, OD, of Verywell Health. "The optic nerve translates this pressure into various images," Bedinghaus says. "Pressure phosphenes can remain for a few seconds after the rubbing stops and the eyes are opened, allowing the phosphenes to be seen." Who knew?

May 17, 1954, a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court handed down its Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision which held that racially segregated public schools were inherently unequal, and therefore unconstitutional. This would be considered a significant date in American History.

On National Cheese Souffle Day, observed May 18th, we can all enjoy a little of this French delight. The word souffle is the past participle of the French verb, souffler, which means “to blow up” or “puff up.” Combine egg whites with custard, and it will puff up into a fine, golden souffle when baked.
The soufflé’s base consists of a French creme base, a flavored creme sauce or puree, and beaten egg whites. Egg yolks and beaten egg whites, mixed with various other ingredients make up a soufflé. The base provides the flavor, and the egg whites provide the lift. Many who make souffle commonly add cheese, jam, fruits, berries, chocolate, and lemon. Serve your souffle as a tasty main course dish, or sweetened it for a dessert.

The Denver Post writes that in 1979, Robin Williams unofficially became the Denver Broncos’ first male cheerleader. When filming for the television show Mork & Mindy, he appeared on the field during a game decked out in the squad’s glittery vest and skirt uniform. It was on this day, Mork, who lived in Boulder, made history. He became the first male cheerleader in Denver Broncos history, trotting out with the Pony Express during an actual game against the Patriots in front of more than 74,000 fans at Mile High Stadium. It was all a part of the Nov. 25 episode of Mork & Mindy. Who knew?
