Who Knew???Each year on May 22nd, National Maritime Day recognizes the launch of the maritime industry in the United States. The celebration also honors America’s Merchant Marines for their contributions and sacrifices for our country. Special acknowledgment is given to ships and seafarers that have held a prominent place in our nation’s history.
As one of the oldest industries, its time-honored traditions compose a full and rich history. Celebrations and ceremonies around the country recognize the people our maritime nation depends on. Each year the Department of Transporation holds a national ceremony in Washinton D.C. at the Department of Transportation headquarters.

An 99-year-old house is built out of newspapers. Elis F. Stenman started building his house in 1922 as anyone else would, with a timber frame, roof, and floors. But when this mechanical engineer and tinkerer began constructing the walls, he chose to use a decidedly different form of wood: newspaper. The Rockport, MA paper house’s walls, doors, and furniture are made of varnished newspapers — roughly 100,000 of them. 215 layers of paper were stuck together with a homemade glue of flour, water, and apple peels to make 1 inch thick panels for the walls. All the furniture, including a clock, desk, and chair, is functional and made entirely of paper. The only exceptions are the piano, which is only covered in paper, and the fireplace. The house has stood intact for over 80 years, with no more upkeep than the occasional varnishing. What’s more, the walls and furniture are still readable, displaying headlines such as “LINDBERGH HOPS OFF FOR OCEAN FLIGHT TO PARIS.” Stenman moved out in 1930, and the house became a museum. Stenman’s grandniece is now in charge of the house, which can still be toured today at 52 Pigeon Hill Street Rockport, Massachusetts. Honor system suggested admission is $2.00. Open daily, April to October, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Who knew?

On May 23rd, National Lucky Penny Day hopes you’ll have good luck all day long. See a penny, pick it up. All day long you’ll have good luck. When you are out and about, look on the ground for pennies. It just might be your lucky day!
Years ago a penny was able to buy something. (Check out National Taffy Day – to see what we used to get for a penny.) Today, due to inflation, the penny does not buy much of anything. The metal value and cost of minting pennies exceed their face value. Many nations have stopped minting equivalent value coins and efforts are being made to end the routine use of pennies in several countries including the United States.
First U.S. Penny The United States first issued a one-cent coin produced by a private mint in 1787. Benjamin Franklin designed it. On one side, it read “Mind Your Business” and the other “We Are One.” This coin was made of 100% copper and was larger than today’s penny. It came to be known as the Fugio cent. However, the first pennies struck in a United States Mint weren’t produced until 1793, but they were also made of copper.

Who Knew???On May 24th, National Wyoming Day recognizes The Equality State.
The 44th state to join the union, Wyoming territory led the nation and the world in granting women the right to vote. In 1869, the Wyoming territorial legislature passed a bill allowing women the right and the governor signed the bill on December 10, 1869. Twenty years later, Wyoming would approve the first state constitution including women’s suffrage. They would be granted statehood in 1870.
In a vast open country where homesteaders had to rely on one another, man or woman, equality had real meaning, true grit. On July 10, 1890, Wyoming became a state.

Honey is essentially bee vomit. When a bee takes nectar from a flower, the tiny creature stores it in its "crop," an enlargement at the back of its esophagus, where the nectar mixes with enzymes. A nectar-foraging bee returns to the hive and pumps out the nectar to a receiving bee. After being mixed with enzymes, the nectar is passed to processing bees that blend the incoming nectar loads, mix them together, then pump out a bit of solution. After some of the liquid in the solution evaporates, it's once again taken into a bee's crop and further mixed before it's finally deposited into a comb where it will become the honey you know and love — or at least used to love. Who knew?

Made from fermented grapes or other fruits, wine is an alcoholic beverage. During the fermentation processes, yeast consumes the sugars in the grapes converting it into alcohol. Different grapes produce different wines. Winemakers will combine different wines to create more complex flavors. There's a company that turns dead bodies into an ocean reef. For those who romanticize a burial at sea, the company Eternal Reefs offers an innovative solution. It mixes the cremated remains of a person with concrete to create a "pearl" onto which loved ones can etch personal messages, hand prints or (environmentally friendly) mementos. The pearl is then encased in a "reef ball" that is dropped into the sea, where it provides a new habitat for fish and other sea life, helping encourage a vibrant ecosystem. It's the circle of life at work! Who knew?
