China owns all the pandas in the world. They are happy to share them — for the right price, of course. Any zoo that wants a panda has to rent it from China, which, Money reports, costs around $1 million a year. What if one of the bears has a baby while in a zoo's custody? The Chinese government charges a $400,000 cub tax. Who knew?

Who Knew???National Vanilla Ice Cream Day on July 23rd tips its hat at the second most popular flavor in America. Take a bow, vanilla. I scream, you scream, we all scream for…VANILLA ICE CREAM!! Of course, the day is part of National Ice Cream Month and not too far behind National Ice Cream Day.
Since Americans love vanilla ice cream so much, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that vanilla is the most common flavoring in North America for ice cream. In fact, many people consider vanilla ice cream to be the default flavor.

A "jiffy" is an actual unit of time. Though it varies depending on what it's measuring, when used in a scientific or mathematical context, a jiffy is typically considered to be 0.01 seconds, or 10 milliseconds. First attested in 1780, the word's origin is unclear, though one suggestion is that it was thieves' cant for lightning. Who knew?

Who Knew???
Each year on July 24th, National Amelia Earhart Day honors the achievements of the aviation pioneer on the date of her birth.
Author and American aviation pioneer, Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897. One of Earhart’s most impressive achievements took place on May 20th, 1932. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh completed the first solo flight across the Atlantic. He flew from New York to Paris in 33 hours and 30 minutes.
Earhart took off from Grace Harbor, Newfoundland four years to the day Lindbergh completed his flight. Throughout the flight, she faced many technical difficulties. Her goal was to land in Paris, France. The previous year, Ruth Nichols also attempted to fly solo across the Atlantic. Had she succeeded, she would have been the first woman to do so. However, Nichols’ crashed while attempting to land for refueling in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia.
Due to Earhart’s challenges in flight, she landed the red Lockheed Vega 14 hours and 16 minutes later in Derry, Ireland. All in all, the flight was a success. She became the first woman pilot to complete the journey. Following Earhart’s record-setting accomplishment, she earned the United States Distinguished Flying Cross.

The woolly mammoth survived until Egyptian Empire times. The woolly mammoth stuck around much longer than you might have imagined. According to New Scientist, when the pyramids were being built in ancient Egypt — around 4,000 years ago — the gigantic creatures were believed to have still been walking the Earth. However, these were a particular type of mammoth—a smaller, dwarf-sized variety that was able to adapt better to the changing environmental conditions. Who knew?

Chihuahuas have the biggest brains in the canine world. At least that is the case in terms of their brain to body ratio. Of course, brain size and intelligence do not necessarily correlate, but it might partly explain why these dogs are known for being especially easy to train. Who knew?
