Who Knew???
Woven into the fabric of this state’s historic landscape, we find revolutionaries, innovators, and philosophers. On August 10th, National Connecticut Day recognizes the contributions of the fifth state to join the United States of America.
Like other colonies of the region, the Dutch first explored and founded trading posts in Connecticut. In 1633, Puritans from Massachusetts established the first permanent settlement. From the outset, the industry established a means to prosperity in the colony. Production of brass buttons and munitions placed the colony in a position to later supply the Revolutionary Army. The colonial governor of Connecticut, Jonathan Trumbull, was the only governor who supported independence.

Richard Millhouse Nixon got caught lying to the American people multiple times, and was found to be the orchestrator of the Watergate break-in at the Democratic National Committee. "Tricky Dick" was a crook that was impeached, then completely pardoned one month later by President Gerald Ford before Nixon could be prosecuted for any Watergate crimes. No Universities were ever named for Nixon. He hid in shame from Americans, both from politicians and citizens, right up to his death. Who knew?

The Founder of FedEx once saved the company by playing blackjack in Vegas. FedEx, the world’s first overnight delivery company, was near insolvency in its 3rd year after the business was established, due to the rapidly increasing costs of fuel, FedEx lost more than $1 million in just 30 days, with no one agreeing to lend them any extra loans – the investors became hesitant in financing capital. Fred W. Smith took the last of $5,000, all it had in their reserves, went to Las Vegas, gambled it on blackjack and won $27,000. That was enough to pay for fuel for another week while FedEx secured a bank loan. Who knew?

Who Knew???National Filet Mignon Day on August 13th celebrates a specialty cut of beef. Usually, from a steer or heifer, a filet mignon is a steak taken from the smaller end of the tenderloin of the beef carcass. Filet mignon is French for “cute fillet” or “dainty fillet.” In French, filet mignon may be called filet de boeuf, which translates to beef fillet in English.
