Who Knew??? September 28 ~ National Strawberry Cream Pie Day Each year on September 28 strawberry lovers get to enjoy their favorite fruit in the form of pie on National Strawberry Cream Pie Day.
Even though strawberries are out of season, the grocers always make sure to stock up on frozen and canned so we can make pies. How else do we keep making fruit pies all year long? Those of us who planned ahead preserved strawberries just for this occasion. And of course, some fresh ones are still available here and there.

More human twins are being born now than ever before. Do you get the feeling that there are more twins around these days than there used to be? No? Well, you should, because according to a new study in the journal Human Reproduction, the "twinning rate" has increased by one-third since the '80s — up from 9 to 12 twins per 1,000 deliveries. Currently that adds up to about 1.6 million twins born each year across the world—meaning one out of every 42 babies is a twin. Helping drive this is the increasing use of medically assisted reproduction, and the delay in childbearing (twinning has been found to increase with a mother's age). Who knew?

Who Knew??? Whether getting one to go or lingering over a second cup, on September 29th be sure to observe National Coffee Day!
Ah, the perfect cup of java. According to an expert cupper (a professional coffee taster), there are four components of a perfect cup: aroma, body, acidity, and flavor.
From the moment the average coffee lover opens a fresh bag of coffee beans, the aroma beckons, percolating the senses. Even those who don’t drink coffee tend to enjoy the fragrance roasted beans cast.

A narwhal's tusk reveals its past living conditions. Much like the rings of a tree can tell you its age and provide clues about the life it has lived, so too does the long tusk of the narwhal. Recent research led by a bio-science professor at Denmark's Aarhus University has shown that this peculiar arctic whale adds a layer to its distinctive tusk each year. And not only do these layers offer insight into the age of the narwhal (they've been known to live up to 50 years) but the conditions in which they lived — such as level of pollution, temperature levels, and even what their diet consisted of. You are what you eat! Who knew?

Who Knew??? On September 30th, National Hot Mulled Cider Day warms our homes with the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg, and apple.
Fall welcomes toasty mugs of mulled cider to wrap our chilled hands around. Such a cozy way to spend an evening, sipping a tart, spiced beverage on a chilly evening while gazing at trees ablaze in crimson, gold, and orange. It is the perfect time to celebrate this holiday and enjoy this delightful drink.
Mulled cider is a traditional fall and winter drink made by heating cider to almost boiling and adding cinnamon, orange peel, nutmeg, cloves, and other spices and then simmering it. Just the scent of it steeping on the stove will warm the home and lift the spirits of everyone in it.

The first person convicted of speeding in an automobile was going 8 mph. According to Guinness World Records, the first person to be charged with speeding was Walter Arnold of the English village of Paddock Wood, Kent. On Jan. 28, 1896, Arnold was spotted going four times the speed limit in his 19th-century Benz — but since the speed limit at the time was just two miles per hour, that meant he was not going too fast by today's standards. The constable had to chase him down on his bicycle, issuing a ticket for £4 7s (63.24 in 2021 US Dollars) and earning Arnold the speed fine distinction. Who knew?
