Oct. 4, 2002, “American Taliban” John Walker Lindh received a 20-year sentence after a sobbing plea for forgiveness before a federal judge in Alexandria, Virginia. (He was released from prison in May, 2019.) In a federal court in Boston, a laughing Richard Reid pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives in his shoes (the British citizen was later sentenced to life in prison). Gave the government a reason to make passengers remove their shoes before boarding an aircraft.

Horseshoe Crabs Have Eyes All Over Their Bodies. Horseshoe crabs have 10 eyes in total, including ones near their mouth, on the top of their shell, and down their tail help the horseshoe crab get around. These eyes are distributed around the body including on top of its shell, on the tail and near the mouth to help orient the animal when swimming. Two compound eyes are easily seen on each side of the animal’s shell. The main function of this set of eyes is to find mates during the spawning season. Who knew?

The first Wednesday in October offers up the seasonal delight, National Pumpkin Seed Day! As the temperatures cool and the leaves turn, snack on these delicious tidbits.
Many of us have fond memories of roasting these delicious nuggets after carving the Jack o’ lantern. However, we never realized just how good (and good for us) they were. Surprisingly, pumpkin seeds have been valued for their dietary and medicinal properties for thousands of years. In fact, pumpkin seeds have been traced back as far as 7000 BC, according to archeologists excavating a tomb in central Mexico.

October 7th may be an unusually illuminating day considering it is National LED Light Day.
We are all born as incredible detectors of light. We intuitively notice differences in color and brightness. And lighting professionals know that much of human sensation is visual. People respond emotionally to light and color, using its consistency to draw us in, like moths to a glowing light. The power of LED lighting affects all of us in emotional, economic, and environmental ways, too.

Cheese May Prevent Nightmares. In a 2013 study conducted by the British Cheese Board, all participants who ate cheese before bed reported having no nightmares. But blue cheese consumption did have a tendency to make dreams a bit odd. A brief history of the British Cheese Board is it formed in 1995 and the members have helped support and enforce the proportion of Cheese that is produced in the UK. The company focuses on the 700 named cheese’s and uses the history of cheese to inform and educate its readers through articles. Who knew?
