Who Knew???Each year on the first Saturday in May, National Start Seeing Monarchs Day raises awareness to preserve the Monarch butterfly and prevent it from being added to the endangered species list.
The Monarch butterfly is a milkweed butterfly. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly because its wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern. Monarchs typically reach 3 1/2 to 4″ in size. In the fall, they migrate south to warmer climates. In the spring, they return further north.

Shopping Carts Were Unpopular at First. Though we can't imagine life without them now, shopping carts did not catch on right away. When their inventor, Sylvan Goldman (who owned the Humpty-Dumpty chain of grocery stores in the South), first rolled out his new invention, nobody wanted to use them. He had to hire "decoy shoppers" to wheel them around his stores and demonstrate their convenience. They soon caught on after that. Who knew?

Who Knew???Mother’s Day is a time-honored tradition of recognizing the women in our lives who raised us, dried our tears, and well, mothered us. Everyone has one or has someone who is like a mother to them. On the second Sunday of May, we honor those women who are our mothers. Whether we shower her with gifts, take her to a fancy dinner or make her a homemade card, what moms want most is to be surrounded by the love of her family. Knowing the people they love are safe, sound, and healthy is a mom’s number one priority.

The Titanic's Owners Never Said it Was "Unsinkable". A key detail in the telling of the story of the Titanic is the hubris of the ship's owners who claimed it could not be sunk. In fact, the White Star Line never actually used that phrase. As historian Richard Howells explains, "The population as a whole were unlikely to have thought of the Titanic as a unique, unsinkable ship before its maiden voyage. Who knew?

Who Knew???Beautiful letters and clever language come together in one celebration on May 9th. National Alphabet Magnet Day recognizes the ingenuity and creativity of making words from magnetic letters.
Have you ever spent the morning rearranging the alphabet magnets on your fridge while you sip your coffee? Perhaps your child sits at your feet, practicing the alphabet while shuffling the letters.
Incredibly, these colorful classic letters have been around for 50 years. In 1972, Fisher-Price first released the School Days Desk. The small plastic case served dual functions as storage and a desk. Beneath the chalkboard top, the desk held word cutouts and magnetic plastic letters.
