Some gamblers are the only real winners as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago White Sox in a baseball World Series marred by painfully bad plays coming from the soon-to-be nicknamed 'Eight Men Out,' Sox players who colluded with bookies to throw the games so their rivals would win.

Who Knew?? 1888: Built between 1848 and 1884 and dedicated in 1885, the Washington Monument—a marble-faced granite obelisk that honours the first U.S. president, George Washington—opened to the public in Washington, D.C. on 9th October.  Washington Monument, obelisk in Washington, D.C., honouring George Washington, the first president of the United States. Constructed of granite faced with Maryland marble, the structure is 55 feet (16.8 metres) square at the base and 554 feet 7 inches (169 metres) high and weighs an estimated 91,000 tons. (The monument’s height was previously measured as 555 feet 5 inches [169.3 metres], but a recalculation based on international standards in 2014 led to its revision.) The shaft’s load-bearing masonry walls are 15 feet (4.6 metres) thick at its base, tapering to a thickness of only 18 inches (46 cm) at the top. At its completion in 1884 it was the world’s tallest man-made structure, though it was supplanted by the Eiffel Tower just five years later. It remains the world’s tallest masonry structure. |

Ben & Jerry’s was going to be a bagel company but the equipment was too expensive. These days, Ben & Jerry’s may be a beloved brand that offers all kinds of ice cream, but when Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield first started their business in the late 1970s, it was originally going to be a bagel company. However, the cost of the necessary equipment was too high, so they instead decided to take a $5 ice cream course that was being offered at Penn State. And the rest, as they say, is delicious dessert history.

In Back to the Future, the time machine was originally an old fridge. When you watch 1985’s Back to the Future, you’ll see that the main character, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) travels back to the '50s in a DeLorean car that’s been turned into a time machine. And while the DeLorean became a signature part of the film, we have to wonder what the movie would have been like if the producers had gone with their original concept, which was to make the time machine an old refrigerator.
According to HuffPost, "Ultimately, it was determined that it probably was not a good idea to use a refrigerator in such a manner as kids might want to re-enact the scene." Parents everywhere are grateful.

October 11, 1975, A new late-night comedy-variety show, 'NBC's Saturday Night,' premieres with guest host George Carlin. The scrappy 90-minute program is launched to replace re-runs of 'The Tonight Show' and proves to have more than a little staying power. Two years later it'll be renamed 'Saturday Night Live.

GENERAL PULASKI MEMORIAL DAY
General Pulaski Memorial Day on October 11, honors a Polish hero of the American Revolution. The day is set aside in the United States to recognize Casimir Pulaski, a Polish immigrant.
Over two centuries ago, he joined the Continental Army and soon rose in the ranks to Brigadier General.
Alongside General George Washington, he built a legacy that included raising an arm
of the colonial military as yet undeveloped - the cavalry.
As such, he became known as the father of the American cavalry.
