USAF 6/1965-7/1969 USAFR 7/1969-6/1971 MIANG 7/1977-12/1997 USAF sent me to Alaska and told me I was "stuck" there for at least two years. I thought Alaska was better than the alternative. MIANG changed aircraft starting 10/1990 (all certifications for unit automatically went to zero until exercises showed we were qualified) Net result -- the closest I came to any live fire was on the rifle range. I was supposed to clear base on Mon 21/7/1969 when I was discharged from USAF. The day before (Sun 20/7/1969) the president declared the next (my discharge date) a national holiday. (It was about "One small step for a man, one large step for mankind.")

USAF, USAFR, 1970-82 Enlisted after months on a waiting list because anyone about to be drafted went to the front of the list. I didn't get drafted until I'd already been in the service for almost 3 years. Went through basic, then went to DLIWC, Monterey CA, for a year and a half for basic and intermediate Polish. In between went to San Angelo, TX, Goodfellow AFB, for tech school. Then West Berlin for the rest of that enlistment. Near the end, there was a request for volunteers for Czech language school, but Polish linguists weren't allowed, because they'd let too many early out and were short. I pointed out that my enlistment was about up and, suddenly it's "you're going to DLI again, sign here". So, another year at DLIWC, then more tech at Goodfellow, then Bavaria, first in a small town called Rimbach, later the whole unit (6913th SctySqdn) relocated to Augsburg, colocated with an ASA operation. I extended that enlistment. At the end of that tour, went to Offutt AFB just outside of Omaha, went on flying status for my last year. Then went into the Reserves, spent my month each summer on deployment with a SAC crew to RAF Mildenhall, flying Combat Sent missions over the Baltic.

Born a military brat (US Army, Fort Dix NJ) Dad advised either Navy or AF so I jointed USAF, 1982-2004. Sr Intel Analyst; Counter-Intelligence and Special Operations (airborne on the MC-130 Combat Talon for a few years) Desert Shield/Desert Storm/Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom. God Bless America!
Now a Field Engineer for a defense contractor (took advantage of VEAP and the GI Bill so got 4 college degrees and even a year towards my PhD but took way too much time with no major career/financial benefits so didn't complete...and was pretty tired of the ultra-liberal elites in academia, anyway. (Lots of knowledge with zero real-world experience and almost all hadn't a clue on how the real world operates...which is sad, actually.)

I am posting here because my uncle just passed away and he was a veteran having served in the US Army during the Korean War. He entered the service on Jan. 16, 1951 in Erie, PA. While in Korea he served as a paratrooper with the 187th Airborne R.T.C and was honorably discharged on Dec. 19, 1952 at Ft. Custer, MI with the rank of Corporal.
He was 89 years old and I just wanted to honor him as I do every person who posted before this. guitarman, I salute you and celticheart, my deepest sympathy for your loss.
