Are there any subforum/topics that are "members only" - ones that require login in order to see, not only to post in?

Not so far. We want to encourage participation by those who—for some really whacky reasoning—steadfastly decline the supreme honor of registering.

From what I see, you don't have to be registered to post or even create threads, as well as read.
in the US Politics board, that is starting to cause a problem, with multiple "guest" users spoofing each other's usernames.
CK, I recommend changing at least the US Politics so that only registered and logged-in members can post there.

I would just want my "highest posts" thread only visible to members only... At least guest posters clearly says guest, it's only the ones who don't have accounts that you never know who really posted...
if guest: assume(false)

Exactly - me as well. There is significant bipartisan support in the politics thread to require registration to post there. It is really quite transparent why those who won't register and post in the politics forum do so...

Recent posters have been going off topic here. The original poster wanted a private area that doesn't show up when unregistered.
I don't think any of the spoofed guests cares anyway, if they did care, they'd register. I don't know why people just don't register all of the names of the so-called "trolls".
I suspect that the forum will die out with no new people seeing activity and able to participate, hence CampKohler's concerns and thus allowing unfettered participation - at least some activity is better than none.
