Two main cars :
344868 miles on a 1984 Volvo Diesel Wagon. this was no cake walk to get to this mileage. the car really started to fall apart @ the 200K mile mark. After that it was a month by month, problem by problem adventure. A few times i thought i was going to give up, like when the camshaft broke in two. or the overdrive in the transmission was slipping . but we got through it with used parts a lot of work, a little anger and a few swear words. every month wondering whats next. right now we spend between $300-600 per year to keep it going (parts only, i am an auto mechanic by trade) and that = about 10,000 miles of driving.
220253 miles on a 1994 Ford Ranger : This was a much less exciting trip. I bought this truck new (the only auto i ever bought new in my life). It was trouble free up to the 150K mile mark and after this it was nickle and dime stuff it still runs and drives fine with no oil leaks or usage. it does need a transmission but i was able to pick up one for $150 bucks and it waits for me to get a moment to install it .......and on we go.............
PS: I just notices the OP of this thread using Ham radio call letters as a screen name. I am also a ham KE7YIJ here........

Wow I see plenty of old 240D's around town...seems they're pretty bulletproof.

"Wow I see plenty of old 240D's around town...seems they're pretty bulletproof."
"Plenty"!?!?! They only made a little over 50,000 of them over 4 years. most overheated due to water pump failure. A good number of the other ones died due to the water pump locking up and breaking the timing belt. then there was the Head gasket failures and cracked valve guides. if somehow you made it through all that the rings wore out at 150,000 miles and you needed an engine rebuild(I did by driving it like a baby carrage, the first time my engine was apart was @210,000 miles)
Before anyone thinks this is Volvos fault , it was a VW truck engine in these cars, an engine never made for high speed hwy use and if used at only low speeds would last the 150K without any problem........but that's not how we drive in this country.
