I've been offered A 2007 VW Passat by a family member. It'll have approx. 71,000 mi by the time it gets here from out of state. It's a 4-door sedan, automatic, 4 cylinder. It's much newer than the old American car I have now, which also has low mileage (approx 125,000). Maintenance has been very good, and I have a mechanic who works on it independently. The cost of driving and maintaining it have been low, a big plus for me.
My mechanic's ability to work on the Passat would be limited, and I might have to go to the dealer. I imagine parts will be more expensive, too. I've been told it takes premium gas and needs synthetic oil. The pluses are that it's much newer, does not have rust (like my current car), and has modern conveniences such as airbags and a sunroof. (But really)
Does anybody out there have any advice or experience with this kind of car? I'm in a quandry and am supposed to decide by today.
Thanks.
