I am not believing that Jordan can win it this year. This just is not his year. He has as many Missed Cuts as Top 5 finishes (5 each). Tiger is improving. Could he win again and it be a major??? That definitely would make the headlines and be good for the world of Golf. Halfway through the PGA. Woodland is at -10 and has a one shot lead over Kisner. Rickie and Koepka are at -8. DJ headlines a group of 4 at -7, which group includes my least favorite player, Schwartzel. I've never liked that guy since he cheated (my belief) at the Memorial a while back now. My May 10, 2013 10:52:06 AM post in the place we used to post's " Plight of the Armchair Referee" topic explains my dislike of Schwartzel. I posted: "I'll never be a fan of Charl Schwartzel since watching him play his second shot on the 11th at The Memorial the year he won the Masters. His drive came to rest in the first cut of rough between two sprinkler heads that were about 12 inches apart. Schwartzel called in a rules official to inquire about a free drop away from the heads. The official explained to Schwartzel that if he believed the sprinkler heads would interfere with his swing, he could have a free drop. His stance was clear of the heads, and he had a decent shot at the green from where the ball lie. "The only way Schwartzel could have struck one of the heads would have been if he had been a 36 handicapper with an unreliable swing path or if he were Bubba Watson and had decided to play a big bender all the way across the fairway, over the trees, and then back into the fairway. But after considering it for several minutes and asking the official for clarification a couple more times, Schwartzel ended up taking relief by picking up his ball and dropping it within a clublength and ending up with a much better lie on the fairway. He knocked the shot to within about 12 feet of the hole. "At that moment, I lost all respect for Schwartzel. Since then, I've seen him miss a ton of makeable putts, and each time he misses one, I smile while uttering a sarcastic, "Ooooh, that's too bad".

After that digression, here's the report on a few more notables so far in the 2018 PGA:
Tiger is 6 off the lead at -4, tied for 19th -- he was 4 under in the second round which he finished this morning. Can his back handle a double header after a long rest? Jason Day, Justin Thomas, and John Rahm are each a shot ahead of Tiger. Zach Johnson and Rosie and seven others are tied with Tiger. Rory and Jordan and nine others are a shot behind Tiger. Two of those nine are early in round 3.

What a fun Moving day it was at the PGA yesterday! There was a ton of moving! Reigning two time US Open Champ Brooks Koepka moved up! His 66 (a couple of late bogeys and a missed 12 footer on 17 prevented a 63!) vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard at -12 where he enjoys a 2 stroke advantage heading into the final round. Also moving up was Adam Scott (I didn't mention Scott in yesterday's post), whose 65 puts him at -10, alone in 2nd so Scott completes today's "final pairing". Good to see Adam playing well again -- it's been a while! Dropping into a 3 way tie for 3rd at -9 was yesterday's leader, Gary Woodland, who was very unlucky yesterday, missing fairways, and struggled in with a 71. Joining Woodland in 3rd are Ricky and John Rahm. Tiger headlines a group at 8 under and in a 6 way tie for 6th. Jason Day, Justin Thomas, Stewart Cink, and Steve Lowry, plus my bestest buddy Charl are part of that logjam. Finally, a group of three are tied for 12th another stroke back at -7, including Brittish Open Champ Molinari. Tee times for these leaders start at 1:55, led by Kisner (also -7) and Molinari. It looks like quite a horse race! I'm rooting for Rickey, great with Koepka, and fine with Thomas taking the trophy. I'm not a Tiger fan, but I'll take him ahead of any non American. I'm definitely rooting against Schwartzel! Here's a link to a leaderboard that updates automatically.

What an exciting finish!
Brooks Koepka made his 2 shot advantage hold up, shooting a final round 66, -16 overall, and becoming only the fifth player to win 3 majors in his 20s! To accomplish that, he had to hold off one of the four record holders -- Tiger! Woods shot a "career best in the last round of a major (a Jim Nance statTM)" score of 64, but still finished 2 strokes off Koepka's pace, finishing 2nd. Koepka sat out this year's Masters with an injury, so starting with the 2017 US Open, he's won three out of the last six majors he's played in!! At this point, he's a shoe in for Player of the Year.
Another remarkable facet of Koepka's win is that he's won only one other time on the PGA tour in addition to his 3 majors -- the 2015 version of the always rowdy Waste Management (I call it the "Trash") Open! You don't often see that kind of ratio of major wins to total wins from multiple major winners!! To be fair, Koepka nearly won the AT&T Byron Nelson tourney in 2016, losing in a playoff to Sergio.
There's so much that could be said, but I'll close with a final note about Charl. On a day when more than two-thirds of the field shot at or below par, Schwartzel managed a +5 75, tied with two others for the day's highest round, and dropping like a rock from the 6 way tie for 6th at the end of the 3rd round all the way into a tie for 42nd place. Karma!

The US had a really strong start Friday in the Ryder Cup. They jumped out to a 3 - 1 lead in the morning four ball event! The route was on!! Then it fizzled. We got swept 4-0 in the Friday afternoon foursomes, trailing 5-3 at the day's end. A decent showing Saturday would overcome the 2 match deficit. It wasn't to be. Europe expanded it's lead by two more matches in the Saturday am four ball matches, and afternoon foursome matches were split 2-2. So we entered this morning's singles competition in a 4 match hole, down 10-6. Europe needed only 4 and a half points today to win the Cup, while we needed 8 out of 12 available to retain it. We managed only 4 and a half. Final score: Europe 17.5, USA 10.5.Stats are for losers, but Team USA didn't do well enough overall for me to praise anyone's performance, and apparently there was much bad play, there's no point singling out anyone. I think it's safe to say that Jim Furyk will not return as Captain in 2020.

US got routed in nearly every match I saw. Not sure why Phil was even on the team, as he has not done much this season and looked over matched.
Maybe they need to go back to US vs. Britain for the Ryder Cup.
