Photographer beware ...link This really isn't new. European copyright law covers items on display in public view. The original copyright on the Eiffel Tower expired some years ago, but the night view is under current copyright. Nobody's gonna jail you for taking a casual photo, but if you do any commercial work involving these copyrighted items, you may be liable for royalties. US copyright law is more liberal, but there was a case in the mid 2000s regarding Chicago's Cloud Gate ("The Bean") and commercial use of photos of it. There were many misunderstandings about it, and there were reports of casual snapshooters being told not to photograph it.
