Many Gas Buddies have by now noticed that the weekly GB opinion polls are now repetitive and the discussion thread is no longer active. That was not always so.
When the polls first started as a feature on the GasBuddy website as a source of points, they were often suggested by members in a Talk Back To Us topic started February 20, 2001 by former Moderator (and GB Co-owner) DC. For a long time (at least since GM edited the lead post on April 10, 2008), former moderator GM (a GM account remains active, but it is now shared by the moderator group) oversaw the poll discussion topic, choosing the weekly poll from the various suggestions. Over time, the topic evolved and the contributors to the topic normally reached a consensus for the weekly suggestion.
At some point, moderator CC took over for GM, typically opening the poll suggestion topic on Friday afternoons and leaving a note to say he’d picked up the poll. Once in a while CC didn’t show up and the website’s default system kicked in, resulting in a poll rerun from the same week in the preceding year.
Last winter, with no announcement or explanation of any sort, CC stopped appearing in the suggestion topic a month or so prior to the big announcement of the website changes that GasBuddy implemented on March 27, 2018, including the removal of the discussion forums and profile whiteboards. Since the fifth 2018 poll, the weekly polls have been reruns and, starting with the 5th 2019 poll, they are rerunning for a third year in a row.
The weekly poll that starts on March 10, 2019 will ask: “How many miles are put on your most-used vehicle in a typical year?” The four offered responses are: Under 6,000 miles, 6,000 to 12,000 miles, 12,000 to 24,000 miles, and Over 24,000 miles. In 2018, 20% selected the 1st option, 40% the 2nd, 29% the 3rd and 8% went with the last option (rounding makes up the balance). The only change from 2017, the poll’s first year, was a 1% decrease in the 1st response. Obviously, GBs are a consistent lot!
As GasBuddy no longer offers a place to discuss weekly polls, the discussion thread for this article at GBO is wide open!
