Do you have a ROUTINE that you inherited from your growing up, do you now let the new technology dictate your maintenance habits, are you do it at home, or use a Garage/Dealer for your needs??

We only have one vehicle at home and the frequency of the Maintenance has dropped tremendously because of family situation where the car sits at the driveway just for short trips around town.
I had the 1st Oil Change and Rotation back in Oct 2018, today 7 months later it was time for the one today..The car will be 2 yrs old in 30 days and it now just has 15,500 mls.
Practically new... The Service Employee at the Honda Dealer that we know for ages, showed me the 2 Air filters, the Engine one and the Cabin one, both nasty dirty, but their prices were outrageous, so while they finished with the maintenance and the wash, I got on eBay and with the phone right there I bought both filters for a mere $17.00, they come in next week and I am done in 5 minutes replacing them.
It's great to be able to do things to this day that we did when young and moneyless, not poor anymore but never throwing money away.

The Air Filters arrived yesterday late, 1st thing this morning I replaced them both in no more than 5 minutes and I saved a TON of money !!!

It's always been that the manufacturer should know best... at the very least it should reduce number of (expensive) warranty work calls.
Of course after the warranty period, all you - but ultimately it does tarnish the brand if it breaks just out side of warranty.

My Ford Escape has routine maintenance scheduled every six months or 5000 miles, whichever comes first. What the manufacturer calls for. If my housemate drives it, it's every 5000 miles. If I pretty much exclusively drive it, it's every six months. On the last maintenance, it came due just under six months.

we do maintenance as needed per the individual car and it's needs
high mileage cars with regular oil get oil changes every 3000 miles. newer stuff (80's and newer) with mobil1 get changes every 5000 miles. All other fluids (transmission,PS, brake, coolant ,dif oil, ect) get changed out every 50,000 miles. At every oil change the entire car is looked over from bumper to bumper from brakes and tires to bulbs and wiper blades
Air filters are blown out with compressed air and reused until they rip from age. tires are rotated as needed, some cars never wear tires unevenly so they never need rotating others not that lucky. spark plugs and other such things will start to show signs of wear with hard starting or a minor misfire, replacement as needed. no non liquid parts are replaced just because it's time, there has to be a need to replace something.
I figure we are doing good, in my lifetime none of us (8 drivers in our extended local family) have had any major part failure until well over 200,000 miles and our cars are replaced for one reason or another right around 250,000 miles. for some odd reason it's always right around the same mileage, and we sure do run them right till the end ..and then some My 84 Volvo broke the trend has now topped 500,000 miles and is dying slowly, that said it still will cruse with the AC on @70mph for hours in the Arizona sun, no problem at all.
As far as electronic reminders, none of us have cars new enough to have them. our newest is a 2007 and our oldest is a 1953.
Even if we did, i would not use them the manufactures don't care if the car lasts past 100,00 miles most people get rid of there cars before that ..........At 100,000 miles we are buying not selling and i want it to last............for a long long time.

I don't reuse one time use filters except for noncritical purposes. They tend to be fairly well clogged with crap.
The exception is my lawnmower, I use an air compressor to clean out the air filter of lawn debris from time to time. Works fairly well.

If I had an air compressor I would probably use catusbob method, now if the filter looks like crap after The Blow Job,  no way Jose. |

19,000 mls on all 4 Firestone Tires that came with the Brand New Civic 2017 In late June 2017, but one died yesterday with 2 nails in it and both NON Repairable as per Tire King and Firestone in Miami.
Today I had it replaced with one just like the others, $161.00 out the door. What a rip off.
The MOsT expensive repair so FAR in my 2.5 yrs car
Actually the 1st REPAIR, the other expenses have been maintenance.

The famous TPMS . . . On the side of the driver door there is a STICKER with the Manufacturers Tire Inflation Guidelines but do the Garages, Dealer Service Depts, Tire Stores employees ever look at that ?? NEVER.
For some reason they always over inflate the tires easily by 3 or 4 lbs, and if they do not re-calibrate the TPMS Sensors, you will always find that light coming on on your drive home..
By now I am used to that weird experience. After I replaced the tire Monday by the time I left the place and stopped at Wawa , I realized that instead of 32 Lbs on all four they had them pushing 36 lbs.
I brought them all down to the 32 lbs, recalibrated the Sensor and then ALL was OK again.
