British Prime Minister Boris Johnson went all in today on Brexit by asking the Queen to suspend Parliament from about Sept 9th until the Queen's speech on October 14th. This is apparently a normal request to force a recess before the Queen's speech, but Johnson has gotten it invoked a bit early, and is doing it to thwart efforts by the anti-Brexit forces in Parliament to try to pass legislation requiring another countrywide vote, or preventing Brexit without some sort of deal that Parliament must approve. The Labour party is apoplectic about this maneuver and had originally threatened to bring down Johnson's government in the few remaining days Parliament will be in session before the break via a no-confidence vote. However, that may not happen now because while it's customary for a Prime Minister to immediately resign if a vote of no-confidence is passed by Parliament, it's not legally required. What is required after a successful vote of no-confidence are new elections, but the current PM would have the power at that point to set the date of the elections and dissolve Parliament until those elections take place, and would remain PM until those elections happen. As such PM Johnson could dissolve Parliament immediately if he loses the confidence vote and schedule elections for after the Brexit date of October 31st, thus ensuring that Brexit happens and that Parliament cannot intervene before it happens.

Anyone heard anything recently? Brexit was supposed to happen on October 31, deal or no deal.
Has that been postponed? I thought Boris Johnson was going to do whatever was necessary to drag Brexit over the finish line.

crossposted from another topic: GREAT NEWS tonight from Great Britain!
PM Boris Johnson was forced to call early elections because of attacks from slimy Labour leader Jeremy Corbin [analagous to slimy Nancy Pelosi trying to IMPEACH President Trump!].
And all the lying liberal media in Great Britain has been chortling about how Boris Johnson was so unpopular and how he was going to go down to ignominious defeat!
Well, tonight Boris Johnson has WON re-election by one of the greatest margins over liberal Labour in DECADES! DECADES!
Liberal Labour has suffered an ignominious defeat! Great news, A1!
Now Boris Johnson can finish the job he started (and which his predecessor Teresa May botched badly) -- implementing the vote of the British people to take back their sovereignty by leaving the European Union -- Brexit.
His opponent, Jeremy Corbin the leader of the Labour Party was not only a notorious socialist (even by British standards) but also anti-Semitic.
Britain has dodged a bullet and will finish securing its freedom from the anti-democratic EU! God save the Queen!

Boris Johnson just won a landslide victory over the Labour party and over those who wanted to thwart the will of the people to leave the E.U. Brexit will happen now one way or the other, and in the short term (months at most). The voters have dealt Johnson a far more powerful hand in negotiating with the E.U. It will be interesting to see if the E.U. now will make more concessions in the negotiations, given that Johnson now has the votes in Parliament for a hard Brexit if they don't. I would also expect President Trump in the coming days to start talking about a special trade deal with Britain once they leave the E.U. as a way of upping the pressure on Brussels.
