I don't want to start a new thread unless the OP objects, in which case I'll be happy to delete this (and any subsequent) posts of pre '50s songs. Given the lack of participation, maybe the topic could be edited to be '50s and prior? Anyway . . . . As I noted in a Music forum topic about youtube performances (I posted a video of a live 1938 performance of Swinging in Harlem by Hawkins' band there), I saw The Irishman during it's brief stint in theatres last fall (before it's planned premiere on Netflix) and am now reading I Hear You Paint Houses, the nonfiction work upon which the film was based. Frank Sheerhan, the mobster who admits to the 1975 murder of Jimmy Hoffa, was apparently a different guy before going to war in WWII. The book shares a lot about the prewar Sheerhan, including that he once placed second (with a partner) in a jitterbug contest in NYC. The song he danced to was 1940's Tuxedo Junction by Erskine Hawkins -- Glenn Miller is better known for this song, but Hawkins played it first -- and much more to my taste! OTH, my parents would definitely have preferred Miller's version.
