That's a perfect situation. You pitched the job honestly and don't give a rat's ass if they buy or not.
That's nice that they reached out to you. Even if you can't find a way to get there, you can let them know that a family issue is preventing it.
Hang in there with the in laws. They're supposed to drive you crazy!
I was very satisfied with the outcome of the Super Bowl. Travis Kelcy blew it in the post game, though. He had a golden opportunity to say something like, 'I heard there have been all kinds of odds about me asking Taylor a question tonight. Taylor, will you go ]to Disney World with me?' Seriously, I'd be he put down a bet on that one and laughed all the way to the bank!
I'm still behind last year but I was amazed at how many times I was able to get out a year ago. I added another 9 hole walk/18 holes worth of play yestereday after going to TG in the am. It was really nice and I knew that iffy weather was headed this way. It was warm enough to play again today but the wind was up a lot and it wouldn't have been much fun. So I went to TG and got in a lot of good practice. Way too many mulligans to count my virtual score!!
I do have one golf buddy who works at least as much as I do on his game and his handicap is about 9 strokes below mine. He also studies a lot more than me! Of course, he's a retired enginieer and overthinks a lot of things! Seriously, he's offered me a lot of suggestions that have made a major difference in my game.
Have a great week!

Exactly. Will enjoy the job if I get it, but have plenty of other things I would enjoy doing if it doesn't happen. One thing I have found with this business is that things move slowly. Not even going to think about it for now. If they reach out to me, great. If not, I will keep doing other things I enjoy.
The couple I meet most weekends at the wineries already know what is happening so I am sure most people there know.
The SB was a hard game to watch other than the last 10 minutes or so. Both teams had several turnovers, unnecessary penalties, a missed extra point, and poor play calls. Then there is the DB from SF that messed up his Achilles jumping on the sideline when he wasn't even involved in the play. You expect the best two teams in the league to play far better than that.
I should have known someone as dedicated to improving their game and doing it successfully was an engineer. He probably uses spreadsheets to track his progress.
You have a great combination of real courses, TG, and putting.
Would you believe that I am probably going to a golf event??? The couple that owns the Hotworx I go to are into franchises. They bought three additional Hotworx after this one. They also have a few Dunkins. Now they are getting ready to open an X Golf. I sent you a link to one a while back that is near my house, but just in case, here is the link. They are having a friends and family event there prior to the opening and I was invited. If I go, will let you know what I think.
Happy Tuesday!!!

Sounds like a great approach to that gig and life generally!
I'd guess that couple shared what's going on and that contributed to them reaching out to you.
The SB was a bit sloppy. The numerous false start penalties on 'Frisco were particularly inexusable. It's not like the game was being played in KC. Does make you wonder if 'Vegas played a role . . . .
My buddy has never mentioned a spreadsheet. He's way more concerned with how he hits shots than his score, though he hates bogies. But if birdies or pars are not the result of good contact on the right line, he's still not very happy. OTOH, I tend to take what I can get, recognizing when I was lucky but I'm good with it!
There's an X-Golf in Grandview. I've never been. I'm sure their sim is more precise than what we get at TG and it probably gives you your spin rate and a bunch of other stats. I spent some time in a sim at Golf Galaxy last year when I was considering new clubs and walked out with a printout of my shots. It's pretty neat and X-Golf will have a ton of amenities lacking at Golf Galaxy. I hope you're able to make the event and look forward to your report. I'm sure it will be fun!
I went over to TG yesterday and turned in a 76 on the virtual Spanish Bay course. The round included 3 birdies and I was truly in a zone early -- 2 under after 4. I was less than a total of 10 feet over 4 shots from being level par. None of my shots was as bad as the one I discuss here.
Today, it was very windy and I just did a putting session and a light putting session. Both went pretty well. Ready for the weather to turn nice but I know that's a ways off.
Have a great weekend!

Excellent round at TG. Keep it going.
What is the difference between a putting session and a light putting session?
I think you are right about the weather.
Not sure of the X-Golf date yet so I will have to decide when I find out. She told me but I was getting ready to start my workout and forgot. Hopefully it is an evening I can make it. The only thing I ask is that if I go and share my numbers with you, you don't laugh too hard.
Frustrating day with my in-laws. Hoping tomorrow is better.

To me, 12549344 is a better hand than 12549394. But the rules say Mystified is better than Straight Jacket. Whatever.
If you are able to go to the X-golf event, you need to go in with zero expectations of your game. You have not been playing and are bound to hit more less than stellar shots than you normally would. When you hit good ones, pay attention to the stats the tech provides and compare it to other good shot stats. Golf is a lot like fitness -- you have to start where your are and progress from there.
Hope things improved with the inlaws.
It should have said "light chipping session", meaning I chipped but not as much as normal. Yesterday both sessions were light but I also went to TG again. I played Spyglass Hill virtually. I may have played it once other time but I had a number of mulligans in the round b/c I was trying to learn the course and didn't care about scoring. Several times, I hit what I would have thought would be a good shot but it wasn't.
Surprisingly, the snow the guesser forecast actually materialized. We had about 4 inches by this morning. But the national guesser said there was only a 20% chance of light snow today. Another inch came down. I think it may be done, so I'm headed out to chase my snow thrower around for a while.
Hope the weekend's going well and you can make it to the wineries!

Found out the date hasn't been set for the friends and family night at X-Golf. As soon as it is firm they will let me know and I will keep you posted. Thank you for the sage advice.
Not really getting better with my in-laws. Mrs. Hawk had a few arguments with them over the weekend. The good news is that I have been very good at biting my tongue, or when they get to me, leaving the house for a while. Still at least a couple months of this ahead.
Our weather clown was actually right on the amount of snow, although his timing was about 6 hours off. It is all gone now though due to the temps before the snow and the high temps the past two days. Didn't even shovel.
You are definitely mixing up the practice more with the weather not allowing you to get out. Good strategy.
Last Friday at Hotworx there were about 10 minutes left in my session when I heard someone changing the settings on the controller from outside the room. There are two controllers, one outside the room and one inside. She was increasing the time before it shut off which is fine. That way, when she was in the room, it would not stop heating on her. But then she decided to change the temperature of the room without asking me, even though she saw me in the room. I had it set at 125 and she moved it up to 130. My workout has four factors (time, elliptical resistance, cadence (speed), and temperature. Needless to say, I was pissed. She then went in the room across the hall for a 45 minute yoga session so I knew I had a chance to teach her not to mess with seniors. When my session was over, and when she wasn't looking, I turned the controller off and cracked the door open slightly, which meant the room would be closer to 74 degrees when her workout started. The room takes about 15 minutes to get back to temperature so I am sure she was not a happy camper. I texted the owner mid morning and told him if he received a complaint, it was me, and I was guilty. He just laughed and replied, "love it!"
Made it to Defiance Ridge Sunday and intended to hit the other two wineries as well, but I never made it past DRV. They made me feel really special. All of them that know me made it a point to come over and say hello and ask how I was doing. A few even gave me big hugs and fist bumps. Their menu had also added a few new items and I tried one of them, the NY strip steak sandwich. It was awesome. A lot of steak sandwiches are either shaved steak or sliced steak. This was the whole uncut steak. Definitely getting it again. And the reason I had to stop there, you guessed it, the pours. Started with my free pour at the bar and it was an overfull glass of Norton Port. When that was empty, another one of the bartenders came over and over filled it again. Not to be outdone, the original bartender filled it one more time before I went to a table to eat. Yet another bartender, who I was talking to at the bar asked me if I ever had one of their Bloody Mary's. I told her no. She told me they were awesome and that I should try one. When I got to my table, she came over to the table with one for me, all on the house. Needless to say, when I finished eating, my BAC was above the limit, so I came back in, drank water at the bar, and talked with the bartenders about an hour more before going home with a safe BAC.
Happy Monday!!!

So do you have a new tongue piercing? Seriously, hang in there and they'll be gone before you know it.
Love the story about Karen at the gym. What nerve! I hope she complained and was confronted with her own actions.
So how was the Bloody?? My favorites use a bacon strip as a swizzle stick! Sounds like DR did you right!
Awesome day here! We hit 60°! I walked the airport course and shot an 84. Got a little tired and struggled at the end. I did have a birdie and, once again, came close to a hole in one. It was a really short hole but it still counts! My ball landed about a yard and a half short of the flag and ended up less than 4 feet behind the pin. It had to have rolled about 9 inches right of the hole to end up where it did. I did make the putt -- that was the birdie!
I've made a fairly major change. I watched the Riviera (I don't post sponsor names) tournament last week. I noticed that Jordan Speith -- a golfer I've followed since he won his first major -- uses a reverse putting grip. IOW, instead of the normal grip, his left and right hands are reversed on the putter with the left hand being lower than the right. I'm fairly ambidextrous and probably would be a left hander if I'd been allowed to choose. Well, for things I did choose, I'm a lefty -- pool, kicking, and the like. But I'm sure that when he was teaching me about baseball, my dad forced me to bat and throw right handed. A golf swing is close enough to a batting swing -- plus, my only club for about 5 years was right handed! -- so I'm a right handed golfer.
So after watching Speith, I gave it a try on the putting mat yesterday and today. With the reverse grip, the left hand has a much larger role and while I've been aware of the grip for years, it always looked weird and I never tried it before. I was making putts and keeping them on line and it felt very natural, so I tried it on the course today and putted pretty well. I made everything inside 5 feet center cup and made a couple of longer ones and, it seemed, my misses were closer on the average. So I'm going to stay with the new putting grip!
Happy Humpday!

That is a huge change! I know how crucial the grip I use in TT is to my game, even though there are others that people are successful with as well. It comes naturally after years of practice and changing it would be extremely difficult/uncomfortable for a while. I have only played with a few other grips in fun but never seriously. Sounds like your change is very successful so far. Who knew something like that would be another way to improve your game? Keep it up!!!
If I make it through the period with my in laws living here without a major melt down, I am applying for sainthood and will not be happy if it is not granted.
The Bloody Mary was excellent. Will have to suggest the bacon swizzle stick. Great idea! They really take care of me at DRV which is why I keep going back.
You have heard me talk about the early morning speed traps between my house and HW. This morning, I was in the right lane going 43 in a 40 and the car in the left lane right alongside me was doing the same. We both had a car riding our rear ends dangerously close. As we went over the slight hill where the cop usually sets up, there he/she was. I think we saved the people behind us a ticket today.
Happy Thursday!!!

Sounds like you're a lock for sainthood! In the meantime, hang in there.
On that stretch, if you're getting tailgated like that again, consider slowing down so one and then the other tailgater can pass and then get the speeding citation. They really deserve it.
Two of the vehicles I typically drive are impossible to see over or even around, especially if the trailing car is a sedan of some sort. It amazes me that they creep so close -- there's no way they can see anything other than my tailgate and a view up at the rear window. They can't see what's ahead through those windows. And if they do get a chance to pass, from that close, it's going to be slow.
Better to be back further and accelerate into the gap and swing around quickly. I learned that technique driving the hills in northeastern Ohio. If you were following a large truck up a hill, you needed to be ready to blast past the truck at the peak if it was clear to pass. Otherwise, the truck would have a head of steam and you'd be sniffing fumes up the next hill, too. Comes in pretty handy even on the freeway.
Just like TT, the grip is the connection to the club. I'm on day 5 of the change and it's starting to feel more normal. I won't get another chance to putt on a course until Monday or Tuesday. Looking forward to when the weather is better more often and I can work on a putting green. 9 feet on the mat is fine but I've got to get a feel from 30 to 50 feet. I'm also really liking how the chipping is coming along. I'm hopeful that when I miss greens, I'll be getting up and down a lot more frequently between being closer with the chips and deadlier with the putter.
Ran a bunch of erands today and picked up Mark Greaney's new thriller, Chaos Agent, (released Wednesday) at the library. Gotta finish one that I'm halfway thru before I pick that up.
Have a great weekend!

Not sure if you remember, but I did that to someone early last year and they got pulled over. Thought about it but he was so close to my rear I was a little concerned about him hitting me if I slowed down. Would have thought the cop would have seen he was tailgating and pulled him over. I just know that when I go to HW early in the morning, there is a good chance I will encounter a speed trap.
Glad to hear that the new grip is still working well and that you discovered it early in the year so you can be comfortable with it when summer rolls around. It will still take some time for it to feel completely natural.
That's one thing I am not good at doing, getting books from the library even though I am a member of both the St. Louis County and St. Charles County library systems. St. Louis County also has reciprocal privileges with St. Louis City but I avoid that part of the region the best I can. Enjoy the book!
The weather is supposed to be excellent tomorrow (72) so I am heading to Augusta to take pictures for my class project. It will give me a chance to get away for a few hours.
The last few months I have neglected my health and my weight has gone up a fair amount. Finally taking care of myself and doing what I should be doing to shed the extra pounds. Eating a lot better and am back at HW.
Hope you have a great weekend as well!!!

Safety first, even if the moron behind you isn't being safe. Besides, going side by side like that probably really frustrated the dude.
We all lapse from time to time. Glad to hear you're back on track. I need to follow that lead!
The libraries here make it really easy. Both systems (Cbus is one and an adjacent county is part of a different system) I use have multiple branches, any of which I can opt to have my selections delivered to. From the county's system, I get books from all over the state. For digital readers (shockingly, I'm a dead tree guy!), you don't even need to set foot in the library. My guess is that your area is similar.
I got out and walked 18 holes at the Airport GC again yesterday. Didn't score well and really struggled with their greens, which had not rec'd attention after it got cold and snowed. Still hit the ball fairly well. Their 18th hole is open but no one in my group wanted to stop afterward.
Today, as I noted in my Cbus post, I outguessed the guessers and walked 9 in the sunshine! These greens were far better than yesterday's and I got a lot of practice in with the left hand low grip. Really liking it. This course is fairly short, so I decided to work on my nemesis hole (it was 2sday afterall!) and hit at least 2 drives/hole choking down on the driver to try to hit it straighter but shorter. Generally good results. On 2 of the par 4s, I also teed one up from the red tee boxes (no markers were out for winter), trying to drive the green. Like a college kicker, both went wide right but if they'd been on target, they'd have been on the green. I also played 3 tee shots on 2 of the 3 par 3s. It was really windy and I played a ton of extra shots. Great practice session on a rainy day . . . .
Have a great week!

Our library system is very good as well however I have not developed the habit of using them other than for the quiet rooms when I was writing my book. I usually take the lazy way out when I want a book and buy it either new or used on Amazon. Maybe it is a habit I should change.
You have been able to get in some excellent practice lately on a real course. If your weather is like ours though, that will change for the next couple days but you should get out again by the weekend.
Told you in the Columbus thread I would tell you more about my picture shooting in Augusta. I went before the wineries opened and let myself into the grounds at Mount Pleasant winery. They told me in the past I am welcome to let myself in any time to shoot pictures. About 30 minutes before they opened I went to the tasting room to visit the bartender, Jack. As we were talking, the manager walked in to say hello. I told him about my photography project and asked if I could schedule a time in the next week or two to get into the cellars and shoot some pics. He told me if I wanted to do it then he would unlock the cellars for me and let me shoot as long as I wanted. Obviously I did and got some great shots for my assignment that is due tomorrow (Wednesday). Of course, even though I did not drink, I left their first tip of the day.
My father in laws last cancer treatment was this past Monday. He goes back in a few weeks so they can assess how successful the treatments were.
Started another class Monday night at the college. There are two major programs for editing photos, both by Adobe. One is Lightroom, which I am very well versed at and the other is Photoshop, which I have minimal skills in. Occasionally I need to cross over into PS do do some things Lightroom isn't as good at. They are offering four 4 week PS classes (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert). I am taking beginning and will decide as I go if I take any of the others as well. I did learn a couple things in the first class and am friends with the instructor, so I will probably continue.
Happy Tuesday!!!

The library would get frustrating if you don't manage it. If the book is popular, if you wait until it's released to reserve it, your turn might not come up for weeks, maybe months depending on demand and how many copies are in the system. For the few nonfiction books I read, I don't care if I have to wait on something. Most of the time, demand has calmed down before a nonfiction book gets on my radar, so I get it quickly. The fiction I read is mostly thrillers and other crime stuff, and I have sources that I watch to learn when new releases are approaching and usually reserve them long before the release date and then I'm among the first to get the book. The library is also much closer to me than a bookstore.
Overdue fines are no longer a thing here but, if you keep an item several weeks past its due date (they auto renew 10x unless there's a reserve for the title), you will likely get a nastygram reminding you to return it. Around here, if you're a teacher, you qualify for "educator" status, which means the due date is twice as long. Mrs. Hawk might qualify for that. That's an advantage if there's an older title (or one with little demand) that you'd like to hold onto for a while.
Sounds like you scored a real coup shooting pics at the winery. The tip was a nice touch! Another might be to return and share the best shots -- they might be interested in displaying some of them and, if so, I'm sure a fair trade could be worked out!
I'm familiar with Photoshop but am not proficient. At one time, maybe 15 years ago, I had access to it. That's the brand name, though Lightroom might be quite good, too.
Hoping the news is good for your fil.
Yesterday, as I noted in the Cbus thread, began with a bang in the (for me!) early am. The wind was too strong to play outside but TG was an option. Did really well in the closest to the pin game (9 shots, averaged about 40 feet from the pin) and had a 40 on the front nine of virtual Pebble Beach. I saved par once by sticking my "putt" (a chip from 51 yards) within 2 feet of the target! Four feet might not have got it done. I also had good putting and chipping sessions at home.
Probably going to TG in a little bit. This morning, I voted early in the Ohio Primary. Statewide, they follow the same check in process and use the same equipment for early voting that will be used on election day. Photo ID is mandatory in Ohio. However, mail in voting is still not secure and I've heard stories of fraud being committed routinely, especially in senior housing centers. I'm sure a few dead people also vote by mail . . . .
Have a great weekend!

Considering most of the books I read were written quite some time ago, the library may be a good option. Until things settle down with my dad and in-laws though, I will not be doing too much reading.
Until we require in person voting with IDs, there will be fraud. As far as military goes, they can have ballot watchers at the bases as well. I have always wondered how many elections in this country were won by fraud.
TG is really providing you the opportunity to practice several aspects of your game when other venues are not a good option. I am expecting great reports from you this spring after your golf outings.
Our new mattress was delivered today. Got it through Costco so there was free delivery and haul away. We really like Tempur Pedic and ours was about 13 years old and had developed some soft spots. I was fine sleeping on it but it bugged Mrs. Hawk so we got a new one. President's day is always a good time to shop for mattresses. The price was the same as it was prior to the holiday, but Costco gave us a $300 gift card for purchasing it over the holiday weekend.
I am emceeing my NSA Chapter's story telling contest tomorrow. Also overseeing the judges and timers. Going to be busy but fun. Too much going on for me to consider competing this year. Maybe next year.
Happy Thursday!!!

Maybe there's a book that would help you deal with the current issues?
Absentee, mail in voting has been a thing in Ohio as long as I've been voting -- that's how I voted in the first Presidential election after I turned 18. I don't think there was much, if any, fraud back then, as it would have been treated very harshly if it had been discovered.
Tempur Pedic mattresses are awesome! Sounds like Mrs. Hawk could play the Princess in the Princess and the Pea! I know someone else who could play that role . . . . Bought the first one about 10 years ago. It came with a 20 year warranty. After about 8 years, there was a sunken area for some reason where I generally slept . . . . Anyway, to perfect the claim, I had to lay a yardstick over the depression and prop a quarter against the yardstick to show how much the mattress had caved in. Then I had to submit a picture of that. My fancy camera pretty much paid for itself with that photo -- I don't know that my cell phone camera at the time would have provided a sharp enough image. They honored the warranty, delivered the new mattress and were required to take the old one away.
Judging might just help you the next time you compete. Good to know your limitations. Don't want to let time spent preparing to speak impact your ability to visit wineries. The inlaws have done more than enough on that score.
I expect my scores this year will be generally lower and that my handicap will drop several strokes. I'd be very good with that. I don't know that I'll shoot a better round than the 76 back in September. Caddyshack rounds are not that common but it could happen! I do think I'll shoot in the upper 70s a few times though.
The work continues. Yesterday, though it was still in the upper 30s, I headed to my Tuesday course. We'll be starting up next month. I was the only whacko on the course for the first hour! The temp quickly increased to the mid 40s and I was comfortable walking in a light jacket. I'll have to play in similar conditions in April, so . . . .
Anyway, I hit at least 2 drives on every hole. Other than my nemesis, #6, I had only 1 bad drive, though one of them on #2 was a little too far left and a tree blocked my approach to the green. It's going to be weird aiming right on that hole this year -- in the past, that would have resulted in a lost ball every time! Only one drive on these holes went right. From the tee, that one looked to be ok but it turned out it had rolled under a pine tree and would have been a penalty stroke for an unplayable lie. But the other drive on that hole went straight down the center of the fairway and ended up as good or possibly better than any drive I've had there in 2 years. On #9, both drives were that way and I parred both, barely missing each birdie putt.
Then there's #6. I work on that hole every time I go to TG. I tried my strategery of choking down on the driver with the stance and grip adjustments I've worked on. 3 drives still went just right of the stand of trees. I had a gap that I could have played each through, advancing them far enough that I'd have had a chance at par but a more likely bogey. One was pulled a little left and struck the overhanging limbs and was knocked down. It was still in better shape than 40% of my drives on that hole last year and if I'd played it, again, I'd have had an outside chance at par. The other 2 stayed left of the stand of trees and left me about 150 yards to the pin. Those were the two I played. Both of my approaches came up short. I got one up and down for par and made bogey with the other.
If I continue to work on that shot for the next month, I think I can improve my good shot/bad shot ration on that hole to well above 50%. The shot that hit the tree, had it been maybe 5 yards to the right, would have probably left me just 125-130 yards to the pin. If I can get 2 of those out of 10 attempts and 4 more to the right of the stand of trees, I'll be very happy.
With the temp now in the mid 40s, I'm thinking I'll bounce over to the other, shorter, nearby 9 hole course. It should be empty and I'll be able to work on that tee shot some more along with a lot of other things.
Hope the weekend's going well!
