This forum is of a hierarchical nature, consisting of categories, boards, sub-boards, threads, and posts. They will be explained in reverse order:
I. Parts of the forum
A. Posts - messages authored by members. Posts are of two types, depending upon their position in a conversation:
1. A so-called original post (OP) - the first message in a conversation.
2. Replies - the second and all following messages in a conversation.
B. Threads - a collective term for the OP and the replies comprising the conversation.
1. Threads are also known as topics in some forums.
2. The OP's author chooses the appropriate board in which to post the thread.
3. The OP's author furnishes the thread's Subject field, which allows readers to determine the thread's interest to them.
4. The OP's author traditionally, in the OP and possibly replies, states the subject and suggests the method of proceeding.
C. Boards - hold threads according to one three different situations by admin and appears to readers named as one of the following:
1. "[Some name] Board" - indicates that there is only a top-level board provided for a subject, and all threads on the subject must fit into it unless and until there comes a time sub-boards are added.
2. "[Some name] Board and Group" - indicates that there is a top-level board for general conversation, and below it, sub-boards for particular aspects of the subject. The top-level board and sub-boards are not interchangeable; it is intended that any given thread will be appropriate for one, but not the other.
3. "[Some name] Group" - indicates that the top-level board accepts no posts, but is a merely placeholder provided to hold one or more sub-boards, into which all threads must fit. This arrangement is used when the sub-boards are so different in character that there would be no commonality between them, and so admits to no general conversation.
D. Categories - holds boards arranged according to audience.
1. Forum Technical Category - holds boards arranged by subject for an international audience.
2. Global Discussion Category - holds boards arranged by subject for an international audience.
3. Local Discussion - holds boards arranged by location for local audiences.
II. Organization Map
A. Forum Technical Category
1. Sandbox - practice and testing area. Groomed often.
2. Communication - pose questions/list problems. Constantly monitored.
3. Operations - articles on how the forum works.
4. Structure - discussion of and request for changes. Constantly monitored.[
B. Global Discussion Category - boards arranged by legacy subjects, requested subjects, and invented subjects.
C. Local Discussion Category - for each state a state board and group; for each metro-area, a sub-board below the state board. This arrangement is intended to allow neighboring GasBuddy members to connect.
Note:
1. The term state means either state or province/territory, as appropriate.
