A Russian friend wanted to see the movie and read the English version of the novel to compare to the Russian version she has. So I checked them out for her, and when she returned them, I watched the movie.
I thought it would be hot stuff from what I heard over the years, but I found it just plain annoying. The four main characters are such weasels that I couldn't even finish the movie. The tenant marries the mother to stay near the daughter, and when he just can't stand her any more plans a murder? It would have been a lot simpler to just not marry her. If there was a thumbs-down option to activate, all four characters would drop like flies if I had a say. What bozos! I suppose it is good acting for all four of them to piss off the audience, so kudos there.
Nabokov's—the book's author—screenplay (compared to 2018's writing at its best) was not snappy to say the least. Maybe it was clever and "with it" back then, but now it seems very dated psychologically. Well, it is dated. Needless to say I never cracked the book. I can't imagine it being improved in the original Russian.
