I just started using Google Photos today and ran into something puzzling.
I uploaded a couple of photos via drag and drop no problem. I chose the descriptionless "Hi Quality" mode instead of "Original", because it self-limits to a reasonable 16 MB with no limits on total storage. Then I wanted to get the URLs for the photos in order to create image calls in posts.
I clicked on a photo to expand it to full size. The URL for the expanded image was ("manually-copied URL"):
The logical thing to do then was to highlight and copy the URL and then paste it into the picture icon's URL field. I did that and previewed the post. But only the alt text showed and no call was formed. What the...? I pasted the URL into a new browser tab and it produced the photo fine. Yet it wouldn't work in the image call.
Back to the photo's page. I right-clicked and clicked Copy Image Location. Then I pasted that into the picture frame icon's Image URL field. The URL copied that way was ("mouse-copied URL"):
So now I know how to produce a working call. But what's the difference between the two methods and why didn't the first work even though they both produce a photo in a browser? I suppose it is explained somewhere, but I haven't had time to look for it.

But more importantly, the picture frame icon accepted this and a working call was formed.
