I found out the reason why so many Sacto Public Library books were being withdrawn and put out on the free cart. In two days they get a shipment of 11,000 new books, and they have to put them somewhere. The funny thing is that the "death shelf," i.e. the bottom shelves of the stacks, has and is entirely empty. Why couldn't they just move the less desirable books down there, and put the new books up above? But no, they actually are getting rid of the less desirable ones.

I guess they base popularity on the number of times a given book is checked out. Which doesn't do much if you have special interests or enjoy an author who doesn't make the best-seller list.

And the number of check-outs reveals nothing about how many times an item is used in the library between check-outs. One volume that was culled and put out on the free cart was Candace Bergen's autobiography Knock on Wood (a reference to Charlie McCarthy's um, building material). I had checked out and read it months earlier, AND NOW I OWN IT. Too bad others won't have easy access to it now.
