Admin Reply: We now have a Computers Board, so you are free to post separate topics and need not cram everything into this one unless you choose to do so. This reply will self-destruct after a few days. -- CK Okay everyone. Line up by size according to height and bring in all those problem PCs for diagnosis and repair.
We had this topic running on the Twin Cities board at thesitethatshallnotbenamed and it always had a fair amount of traffic and was very helpful. I suspect with a national base it could even be awesomer!

Wow! I hope I can contribute! I didn't know this topic existed on the other site!
Admin Reply: There has always been a computer category at the old site. We used it as a catchall for technical topics. because they wouldn't add any new boards.

So, my smoking hot trophy wife and I (and our homeschooled daughter) are in dire need of a new printer.
I want to know who uses what and why? How much was it? What does it do? What is the cost per page? What does it NOT do that you wish it did?
I also want to copy, fax, and scan. Lack of wifi capability wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker, but darn close!
annnnnnd...GO!

I had to replace my printer after Hurricane Harvey. I decided to get a Brother HL-3180CDW; amazon.com sells it for $270 (cheaper than the Epson inkjet it replaced).
It prints, scans, and copies (no FAX but that's dead technology). It has automatic two-sided duplexing. Haven't figured out the cost per page, but it's a color laser printer. It wirelessly prints from every Windows machine and iPad in the house. Haven't yet set it up on the Mac but it has a Mac driver.
The leading US consumer magazine (who doesn't like their name mentioned) has found Brother printers to be the most reliable.

A color laser is definitely in my sights. They have seriously come down in price lately.
Is that consumer magazine the one that trademarked the CR Best Buy?
I know fax is old school, but so am I and there are a number of places out there that are even more old school than am!

"awesomer". Fax may be old school but if you have to send something important, fax is better than email because from what I understand it can't be intercepted, email can.

Have had several printers in the last 25 years. Went with an four in one Brother. $99 entry - $500+ pro Truly plug and play. Even if you're a first time user.

I'm a lifetime subscriber to the print version. But the online version is still $35 a year.
Fax isn't as old-school as a pair of Chucks, but I have a number of them.

I got rid of the separate number for the FAX machine, nobody sends faxes anymore! About the only time my FAX gets used is for one off real estate deals, since real estate people want something closer to a "wet ink" signature. If they need to send a fax to me, we have to schedule it by voice, in other words "Call back and the FAX machine will answer".

I had two times when I had to sign something with a pen: (1) the agreement to have my real estate agent represent me, and (2) at the closing. Everything else was handled by the DocuSign app. And this was in November 2014, over three years ago.

A printer with fax should be able to monitor the telephone line for a fax signal and come on line for it. Years ago there were boxes that would recognize what a call was for (voice, modem, fax) and hand the call off properly, so a printer should be able to I would think.
The medical field is still a heavy fax user. Is it easier to send a form or some medical record by dropping it in the fax machine than it is to scan it attach it to an E-mail, which has to be printed at the receiving end. I am sure there are many E-mails you have all looked askance at, wondering about it's authenticity, but how many faxes have you gotten that you were suspicious of (not that that really means anything technically)?

A printer I had about ten years ago had a couple different settings available for handling a shared line. Something along the lines of assuming the voicemail would pick up on a certain ring or a vacation setting, etc. That particular one didn't differentiate by knowing what type of signal was incoming but I know that technology has existed for some time. Medical forms is at the top of my list of reasons I want a fax.

Faxes are better quality today and easier to read with plain paper rather than the curling fax paper roll that was years ago.

Our main office printer IS our fax machine. Never tried a color fax, though.

dirt girl, wasn't that a hoot back in the day when we had to try curling that thermal paper the other way just to get it to lay down and behave in the copier so we could actually READ the copy of the thing...maybe? LOL! Good times, good times...
