This thread is for those raising Gallus Gallus Domesticus otherwise known as chickens. Either as livestock or pets.

Here are my four Rhode Island Red pullets, their coop and a wild rabbit sharing the lawn. They should start laying around October 1st 2018 This picture was taken at the end of June

I think two of them are laying now. The one above is sort of a "satin finish" shell, the other one lays brown eggs too, but the surface is smoother, almost polished. The other two gals are actually bigger, but their combs aren't as well developed, so I don't think they are laying yet. Who knows they may not start until next spring as the days are getting shorter. Don't know if I want to go to the bother of putting a light on a timer inside the coop to fool them into thinking it's summer.

Third hen has started to lay. One more to go. It will be interesting to see if that last pullet becomes a hen by Halloween.

Last Pullet is still holding out. My guess is, she won't start laying till Spring at this point.

Can't believe that one of them is still laying in weather this cold. May be two of them, I'll have to make note of the subtle difference in the eggs to see if it's just one bird or two that are alternating. The third one that was laying thin shelled eggs gave up for Winter I think, the 4th one never started. If she doesn't start laying this spring, she may well wind up in the stew pot.

It's now mid December and two of my gals are still laying. I can see now why Rhode Island Reds are such a popular breed.

Miami is without a doubt a Latin American Colony....
Under 2 mls from me we have a Super Walmart here in SW Kendall, where every morning around 5-6 AM a few roosters and chickenns populate the parking lot and the music is amazzin, I even noticed last week that across the 6 lanes buzy Kendall Drive on the South side of the WM at the Home Depot Parking Lot there is also now another bunch of the same species.
These obviously have all come from people that had them in their backyards nearby and slowly but surely have gone to create a funky picture in the Area and in the Wild.
I will try to snap some pictures next time I stop by after the early Gym trip so that I can post them here.

We hit minus 17 F last week and the laying hens went on strike. Even though it has warmed up some, they have not resumed laying. My guess is, they are now waiting for the equinox, when it will be light more than it's dark outside.

You have to host you pictures off site on another server someplace. The local allowance ran out ages ago.
