I signed the petition. If they do shut it down, I'm wondering if I can get the license and start my own time service! I would just put it on 5 and 10 MHz, those frequencies have the best propagation most of the time. With 49 acres I could even replace WWVB on 60 KHz.

I see a lot of people who are against keeping it funded saying this service is redundant. Looks like only hams (more of General and Extra-licensed as these are more interested in HF), shortwave tuners, and people who don't want to throw away
- WWVB "atomic" wall clocks, watches, etc. - Field clock sources that are based off of WWVB - people who depend on NTP servers that use WWVB.
It doesn't look good...

You must have 100,000 signatures within a 4 week period as I recall.

Does not look good. Time to play taps for WWV?
It's a pity, I don't think people understand how much this benefits everyone, behind the scene. Granted there are a few that benefits more from it than others...

I've been pricing cesium beam standards on Ebay. Only problem is the ongoing maintenance expense. I'll have to look around in my closet, I think I have a rubidium standard out of an old cell phone site in there somewhere.

You still have to sync it with something, and if you don't sync it to the stars or whatever NIST does, you'll still not be a stratum 0 and need to sync with someone who is...
It's a pity, NIST also did leap seconds for us on the WWV clock.

I know! Write a letter to Trump asking that the shutdown be repealed. Yes, that's the ticket!
I drove up the left side of Kauai once in the '80s to do a bunch of simple equipment installs at the Barking Sands naval base at the north end of the island. Unlike the famous garden paradise on the right side, it was a bleak and desolate drive of scrub and sand with only one interesting spot: WWVL way off the road on the beach. I was really on a tight schedule to get the day's work done and make it back to the airport to catch the return flight to Oahu, so I couldn't stop by to visit either coming and going. At least the top of the airplane didn't blow off.

Yes, I'd have to do "whatever NIST does".
