I've been trying to locate a drive cheap for the heck of it. But yeah likely the incremental costs of the discs killed it, plus optical discs were on their way out anyway.
If it could do it to a regular uncoated disc or regular paper, that would be neat...
Me, getting a burner that could do dual layer DVD-RW's would be interesting...if dual layer dvd-rws were out there...?

I had one, but never used it a great deal.

I just got a small pile of LightScribe DVD+R media for fairly cheap, indeed it has that timing pattern near the hub. Now I just need a drive Unfortunately I now have a fairly colossal pile of blank DVD+R media. I was intending to use for backups but 4.7GB is just not enough... for what? Should I really back up my PVR onto DVD+R media? Sigh. What a colossal waste...

Sigh. What a colossal waste... I've got a number of boxes and spindles of various flavors of DVD media that survived Hurricane Harvey. Did have to buy a new DVD burner, though. Although the interesting thing is I've only used the DVD burner to rip and burn audio CDs. However, when I went to burn a CD from my ripped audio CDs, I found that I didn't own any CD-R discs. The folks at amazon.com to the rescue!

That is true, CD and DVD media are likely will survive floods as long as they're reasonably protected from abrasion, but hard drives likely will not. Not sure about SSDs...
And fire kills everything. There's a reason why it's "Kill it with Fire!" and not "Kill it with flood!"

It took halfway to forever to label a disc with it. Close to 1X speed.

Sigh. What a colossal waste... Given the effect of Kryder’s Law, it’s probably cheaper now to back up a hard drive on another hard drive than a stack of optical media. Definitely easier and faster!

Cheaper if you already own gobs of blank media and dvd writer? Having to buy another drive instantly adds additional cost.

Cheaper if you already own gobs of blank media and dvd writer? Having to buy another drive instantly adds additional cost. If you already have the money sunk into obsolescent tech, why not? But it’s still very inconvenient swapping out a hundred discs to back up a half-terabyte of data. Probably the reason I do Carbonite for my data backups combined with occasional disk images to capture the apps.
