I find many act/react poorly as they're driven, or triggered by emotions.

People who mess up an entire load of recycled material by putting food into recycles are just trash themselves. Not good, but the reality of recycling is that non-recyclable materials will end up in recycling, and will have to be dealt with in the recycling process.
Speaking of recycling, the latest environmental craze is to ban plastic straws, citing damage to sea life in the Pacific from discarded plastic straws and other plastic trash in the oceans. This misses the real issue on multiple levels:
1. Virtually none of the plastic trash in the middle of the Pacific, came from the US. Mostly, it came from China and other Asian countries just dumping their trash into rivers and the ocean. A US plastic straw ban (or any US plastic materials ban) does nothing to address Asian dumping.
2. More broadly, plastics as a whole represent a challenge to recycling. Plastics, which are mostly organic hydrocarbon polymers made from petroleum components, are created with chemical processes not found in nature and not generally reversible in nature, other than burning or (in some cases) prolonged exposure to UV radiation in sunlight. That is, they virtually never biodegrade. Once created, plastics never go away. And they are not easily recycled, as are paper, glass or metal products. To keep plastics from filling our landfills, or worse, fouling our oceans, not to mention using crude oil reserves, we need to figure out how to handle plastic trash and recycle plastics effectively. The plastic straw ban is a feel-good measure that completely misses the larger issue of plastics.

The fees for dental work are beyond realistic. Each dr referral is costing money and they do nothing but refer someone else. EG an abscessed tooth and according to Google any one of them should be able to do a root canal, yet they don't but do charge for visit. IMO we need Universal Health care to bring these excessive fees to a halt.

Overall government is needed to keep some states from treating their people completely without regard to our constitution, and to make all states stronger.
General Washington "I do not believe we can exist as a nation unless there is a central government which will rule all the nation, just as a state government rules each state."

People need to hang onto some money for emergencies. I know it is hard. Very hard for most of us. But in my own experience we do waste money on unnecessary things then suffer worse when an emergency arrives. Granted it took me many years to learn that lesson.

From my experience as a provider of critical and emergency services far too homeowners, landlords, business owners and vehicles owners don't have enough money for emergency repairs/replacement.
Most make enough money to save/invest, however they lack the discipline to save/invest for emergencies, downtime, unemployment etc.
Many lack the discipline necessary to save, sacrifice and delay immediate/short term gratification.
Many waste tons of money on non necessities, excesses, disposable goods/services, depreciating assets etc.
Ditto for my experience as a large scale landlord and private mortgage provider.
Some of my evictions and foreclosures this week were largely due to tenants and private mortgage clients that blew their money on multiple new/newer SUVs, 4WD trucks, motorized toys etc, however didn't keep up with rent and mortgage payments.
Priorities...

Listening to some of the stories of furloughed government workers during the shutdown, it does amaze me how many otherwise well off people are 1 missed paycheck away from financial hardship. Maybe federal workers are more lulled by supposedly having "job security" that most of us only dream at. Still, as MarkJames says, there is a lack of discipline to save for the future instead of immediate gratification.

Being a depression raised child l know how to survive on very little. Have had to do so several times in adulthood as well. I do think people these days that haven't gone thru what l have during my life , even the shortages of the World War II, made me more aware of how to manage , and maybe they haven't had to so don't know how. I am known as a hoarder. I have always had insecure feelings of going with out, and l have a freezer full of food, and duplicate shoes and clothing and buy large quantities of supplies of TTissue and paper towels etc. People laugh at me, but l don't go with out anything. I can live and have on just what l have and no shopping at all for a month , when a big bill comes up like car insurance. IMO people that stockpile are prepared for Earthquakes or such and l want to be prepared. So it isn't entirely fear of going with out.

IMO a title is worth nothing. As a matter of fact when l was a housekeeper at a hospital they changed the name of the dept from Housekeeping to Environmental Services, but no more money per hour. Just trying to sound better? To me Environmental svs sounds closer to a garbage man. Now looking for a housekeeper and some are insulted when l call them housekeepers and want me to say Caregiver. When all they are going to do for me is laundry, mopping and vacuuming and cleaning the kitchen and bath.

I currently employ several housekeepers that take care of my homes, some businesses, some homes of elderly relatives, some year-round rentals and most daily/weekly/monthly/seasonal rentals.
Fortunately none are offended with the title of housekeeper, or being called a housekeeper, at least none that I'm aware of.
Pay, benefits and perks are good, so they likely wouldn't complain.
IMO the title of Caregiver better suits traveling/visiting PCAs, HHAs and CNAs, most of which perform cleaning duties and other non healthcare related duties for homecare clients.
Several of the CNA's 2 of my daughters manage complain that they're more like maids, shoppers and errand girls than healthcare/homecare providers.
I don't care what customers call me as long as they pay me.
When I worked for others many years ago I was offered titles and promotions that came with a lot more work/responsibility/risk, however not a lot more money, so I turned down the promotions.
