Quick question. Has anyone read the fine print and can tell me how posting images here retains or loses rights to an image.

IMHO "post"ing the image somewhere automatically gives rights to the owner of that place you posted it to unlimited rights to display it to anyone who pulls up the page (duuuh!). However, the sticking point is if your account gets deleted or you get banned, you lose your ability to delete the photo - effectively making the photo theirs to do anything they want with it.
So in order to really maintain your rights, you have to host on a server that you can control and inline.
And again anything I 'post' to another server I have to assume I virtually gave up rights to it because there's no guarantee I can restrict access to it by deletion, so I must watermark or degrade the image somewhat - if I care about the original artwork. It's unfortunate, but not much can be done about it...

picturefreak - Thanks for the clear and cogent explanation. I'm not a lawyer (nor do I play one on tv), but once something is "out there" it would be almost impossible to maintain control.

From website terms of service... 15 User Content
You maintain full ownership of all your User Content posted to ProBoards. Because You own Your User Content, under the law, ProBoards requires a license from You before it can allow the User Content to be posted on the Website. For these reasons, the following provision is a necessary part of this Agreement:
YOU HEREBY GRANT THE PROBOARDS PARTIES A PERPETUAL, FULLY PAID-UP, WORLDWIDE, SUBLICENSABLE, IRREVOCABLE, ASSIGNABLE LICENSE TO COPY, DISTRIBUTE, TRANSMIT, PUBLICLY DISPLAY OR PERFORM, EDIT, TRANSLATE, REFORMAT AND OTHERWISE USE USER CONTENT IN CONNECTION WITH THE OPERATION OF THE WEBSITE, SERVICES OR ANY OTHER SIMILAR OR RELATED BUSINESS, IN ANY MEDIUM NOW EXISTING OR LATER DEVISED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION IN ADVERTISING AND PUBLICITY. YOU FURTHER AGREE THAT THE PROBOARDS PARTIES MAY PUBLISH OR OTHERWISE DISCLOSE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION IN CONNECTION WITH THEIR EXERCISE OF THE LICENSE GRANTED UNDER THIS SECTION. YOU AGREE TO WAIVE, AND HEREBY WAIVE, ANY CLAIMS ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THE EXERCISE BY THE PROBOARDS PARTIES OF THE RIGHTS GRANTED UNDER THIS SECTION, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY CLAIMS RELATING TO YOUR RIGHTS OF PERSONAL PRIVACY AND PUBLICITY. YOU WILL NOT BE COMPENSATED FOR ANY EXERCISE OF THE LICENSE GRANTED UNDER THIS SECTION.
You hereby represent and warrant that You own all rights, title and interest in and to User Content or are otherwise authorized to grant the rights provided the ProBoards Parties under this section.

FYI, if you post by attachment here in order to insert the image into a post (like bluewahoo did), add the following immediately to the right of the photo's code:
"[font size="1"]Click to enlarge; click your browser [b]Back[/b] button to return.[/font]" This gives the uninitiated reader an unobtrusive little instruction how to see the full-size image and return safely back to the thumbnail. (Try following this instruction with his above photo.) And while we're at it, everyone who has attached (vs.called an outside host), your homework assignment is to edit that instruction into your post, so that it looks as professional as all get out.
One more thing. Unlike the old forum, this is a photog board, not merely a photog topic. That means this topic, as jim dandy as it is, need not be used for every thought you all have on the various aspects of photography (which is called forking the topic). So, if someone has a question on a different aspect—"what camera is best for cat pictures"—start a new topic just for that. Cramming everything into one looooooooong topic is the old mindset, and I think conversations will improve if we abandon it to take advantage of the new landscape. Newcomers won't have to quote like the dickens to connect their replies with older comments, and so forth. And don't say I should have said this in a separate new topic. Ok, go ahead, you can say it.

From website terms of service... 15 User Content We say you still own your content but since we force you to give us an irrevocable license to use your content for this site, you no longer have any control of any content posted. We're allowed to use this to advertise our board and you cannot get a cent from us for doing so. Since we can't be bothered with copyright infringement, we're allowed to point at you for posting any illegal stuff. There, simplified the legalese for PB.
