I usually call it a "sub."
After all, the place I go for one is not Grinderway, Heroway, Hoagieway, or Torpedoway.
When you comment, tell us where you grew up and where you live now.

I only rarely hear it called other than a "sub."
I grew up in the Kansas City area, and now live in Metro Houston. I've lived in Wichita (KS), Huntsville (AL), and Abilene (TX) over the years.

Went to Subway and got a sandwich on an elongated roll about five o'clock in the afternoon.

Named HOAGIES at Wawa Wawa is from Pennsylvania, where the sandwich on an elongated roll is known as a "hoagie." Looks tasty to me no matter what you call it!

Submarines and Zepellins have the same exact shape, it is just that they travel in different environments...

In Louisiana and west to Houston, a sandwich on an elongated roll can also be a po'boy. Had one for supper. The Houston version has Louisiana chow chow and pickles on it along with the ham, salami, and Provolone cheese. Had one a bit ago for supper.
