I didn't know that bergamot in Earl Grey tea is different from bergamot the flower also know as monarda or bee balm. Well, the things I learn on GBO. I didn't know that bergamot was a flower. Well, it is a tasty flower in my book and other flowers shouldn't be invited to join it in Earl Grey, IMNSHO.

Made a pitcher earlier today with tea that I took from daughter before we left. Unfortunately, I tossed the bag and label and now can't tell what's in it. Youthberry black tea, looks like. Added some local coffee blossom honey and a handful of goji berries (a gift from my student's mom) right into the pitcher then let it brew. Tiny bit sweet, perfect with ice.
BTW, I hope you guys are impressed with the heart shaped shadow in the photo. Click on it to see better. The reddish things in the glass are goji berries.

I googled bergamot and came up with this: Bergamot is a variety of orange that is often grown in Italy and France. The rind's fragrant oil is added to black tea to give Earl Grey its signature pungent punch.
There are a lot of misinformation about bergamot even in tea literature.
The bergamot in France is a citrus fruit that looks like a small and squatty orange with a nub on top. At the markets, it's called bergamote, citron doux (sweet lemon) and lime méditerranéenne (Mediterranean lime). It's not used in Earl Grey or at least, not in quality Earl Grey. It's mostly used in marmalade and by itself as juice.
The bergamot in Italy is a green or light yellow pear-shaped citrus with wrinkled skin. It's grown in Calabria and called bergamotto di Reggio Calabria. Reggio Calabria is the province at the toe part of the boot before the crossing to Sicily. It's not eaten as a fruit because of its bitter taste. although the juice and peel are used in vinaigrette, cocktails, risotto, desserts, and marmalade. All of those usages, however, are only secondary because Calabrian bergamot is planted mainly for the essential oil extracted from the rind, which is used in Earl Grey and perfume. Calabrian bergamot is the only bergamot used in quality Earl Grey.

Now you know it's not a flower, but re: other flowers joining Earl Grey, you may want to make two exceptions when you try Mariage Frères' Earl Grey Provence and Earl Grey French Blue. The former has an extra warmth from wild lavender and the latter has a hint of sweetness from cornflower. Neither flower interferes with the fragrance and taste of bergamot. I like both teas, and it's not because I'm an ardent fan of MF but because the two combinations really work.

365 days a year I make a gallon of iced Lipton tea, brewed from loose black tea leaves. Mm Mm good! For hot tea I drink Earl Grey. It is so relaxing. I always thought bergamot was from a citrus tree. I googled bergamot and came up with this: Bergamot is a variety of orange that is often grown in Italy and France. The rind's fragrant oil is added to black tea to give Earl Grey its signature pungent punch. lacey: a gallon of iced Lipton tea?!!! That is SOOOO wrong... thanks for the bergamot info.

Thanks for the info
