Oh, so glad to see cgrover (Twin Cities, MN) and Tru (NAPA CA) and geezer post again, even if it's only a one-off. But I do look forward to Tru coming back more often, even if it's not every day. I'm not good at every day either. I hope m6gm (Kentucky) and Trish are healing and getting better. I've been intending to send a personal message to ask how they're doing, but I haven't done it. Maybe this will do it instead, if he's checking into GBO at all. I don't have his personal email. I didn't know it was his birthday, either. Belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes for good health, too. I think of birthdays as being the start of a whole new birth year, so there's still time for it to be happy and healthy. (Fingers crossed).
Tru, I've been wondering how you're doing, too. Health and fires and smoke, etc. Sorry about your leg but I hope the rest is ok (or better). I've been meaning to send you an email, too, but I've just not been good about keeping up that way, in general.

Tru, we occasionally get the smoke from out west here in eastern New York. It makes for spectacular sunsets.

Hi all!
We had a bad storm the other night. I knew it was coming but had put off preparing the balcony. So I had to go out to do it after hearing it start. But I remembered to be more careful to put my outdoor shoes on correctly and not try to run, since that is how I fell previously. And there isn't as much junk out there now. I got the chair folded up before it blew around, and moved two of the tomato plants closer in to the building. One is on a plant holder with wheels, so is easier to move. The other I pushed across the floor. The other two, sitting up on the little plastic tables, stayed put. I thought about moving them, but didn't want to try lifting and carrying them now that they are larger and heavier. And it was raining hard and blowing fiercely, so I just hoped they were now heavy enough and that the wind was coming from the right direction so they would not blow over. I "hid" the mini eggplant close to the building behind a pillar. It is larger and more spread out now, but there are pretty little purple flowers on it that blow off easily. And at least one, and maybe more, teeny little baby eggplants coming from some (or one) of them. The new basil plant, sitting on the big table, still in a little starter pot had blown over on the table, but that was no problem. I just moved it back a little ways and kind of sheltered it between the older one and the chives, which are in sturdier pots with more dirt in them.
The wind was very strong, and I wondered if it was enough to be tornado strength, although it was not a tornado. It wasn't. I heard on the news in the aftermath that some of the winds were up to 60 mph. The NOAA page for my general area says the highest were 40 mph. It felt stronger than that, as far as I could tell, but I don't really know about those things. So the wind strength was somewhere between 40 and 60 mph. I saw on the news that there was very severe damage in some areas. I haven't looked up for my immediate area and I'm in the back so can't see the street from here. There's a flat garage roof that I can see from here and it is still covered with water, although it hasn't rained in over 24 hours. I don't think we got the full brunt of the storm.
At one point during the storm I heard something bang loudly on the balcony and thought, "oh no, one of the tomato plants blew over". It was too dark to see from inside and I wasn't going out. But luckily that wasn't it. The plant I'd pushed across the floor used to sit on a big, heavy plastic "milk" crate. I'd moved it in a previous storm and left it off, closer to the building. That crate, which is pretty heavy on its own, had blown across to the other end of the balcony. No harm done, thankfully.

My son came down from Sacramento area to spend the afternoon with well the day with me Saturday. He rotated my new mattress and did a few other things for me then took me shopping and to lunch which I paid for because it's his birthday. As I've mentioned in the past I always enjoy my son's visits .
We had a evacuation here the other day for a gas leak which put us out in the cold for about 15 minutes I guess. We have heat waves for 2 or 3 days and it cool down , this day was in the sixties. Then I said wait a minute we're all electric why are we out here? And I was told well our water heaters are gas that's right next to my kitchen, why cant I have a gas stove? When the power goes out we have nothing to eat or cook on and we have gas right here. Doesn't even make sense. Oh well..
Some good news, Council on Aging got a referral from someone d I think from the last hospital visit or something and they contacted me or a mssp contacted me to provide me with whatever they can to keep me in my home. LOL I am trying to get in assisted-living I don't want to be kept in my home. Mainly because I don't want the meals that are delivered they are awful Frozen junk. Meals on Wheels is a big floppa Rooney but the transportation they offer is going to be very helpful to me as I am planning to give up driving completely. I only drive about once a week now. Maybe twice when I have to go to a doctor.
just got a notice that I had to replace my doctor she is now quitting also so I'm going to have to get another new doctor. They aren't much help anyway nowadays $200 for a phone call when I call to say I am not happy with new drug s side effects am quitting it and going back to old one. Thints are mainly ok . Good to see some returnees.

Great to see folks here again! Tru, so glad to hear from you, and it was wonderful news that you got to spend that time with your son.
Well, it feels more like fall now. Not too bad yet, still in the 60s during the day, but it's started getting down into the mid 40s at night. I already feel chilly most of the time. I'd love the Atlanta and Tx temps, but w/o the humidity. For me, that's what makes those temps hard to take. As I've said before, I love SoCal weather!
We had another bad storm a few days ago. I knew it was coming so put plants toward the back again. Nothing blew over, but I can't tell if a tomato or a flower that is not yet a tomato blows off, it would likely blow away so I don't know what's gone. I was waiting and waiting for that storm, as the forecast made it look like it was going to go on, maybe for most of the day. It took a long time to get here. But as I was waiting, you know how sometimes there's so much moisture in the air you can almost see it? When it looks like it is raining but isn't? That's how it was. Then the storm came and was fierce. The wind was blowing really hard. But in a flash it was over. I was so surprised, expected it to go on, but it didn't. Weird. Again, I don't know if/of anything blowing off the plants, but I can't really tell.
I finally had one of the things that I usually like in the summer. A tomato from one of my plants, cut up with a generous amount of EVOO (extra virgin olive oil), a bit of pink Himalayan salt, small (Persian?) cucumber sliced and some basil fresh off my plant. Yum! It's the first time I've made it this summer, and the time is almost over. It's cool and refreshing. It's a variation of Caprese, I guess. I didn't put any cheese on it, but when I do it would be feta, not mozzarella. To me fresh mozzarella doesn't have any flavor. Mine wasn't pretty like in the pictures, just tasty. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caprese_salad

Good morning. Our days of mid 90 degree temperatures are now passed and we've settled into 80 degree days. My apartment staying cool allowed me to cook without needing the AC. And I have been cooking for me a lot one thing I have really enjoyed was stuffed acorn squash although I did it wrong it turned out very well. Seems you're supposed to pre bake the squash then add the stuffing I did not do that. I also made a breakfast dish of potatoes onions green bell pepper and chorizo. Downside is makes for a lot of dirty dishes.

Isn't chorizo spicy? I've never tried it. I believe there are two kinds: Spanish and Mexican. I think one is spicy and the other is not, but I don't recall which is which. And I assume it's pork, which I don't eat. I've been eating a lot of things like turkey wieners, chicken brats, Beyond Sausage which is vegetable based "brats" and turkey & cranberry "sticks" which are eaten cold, right out of the package. These are all very easy to make which is part of why I like them. I just stick them in a nonstick fry pan for a few minutes, then the pan is very easy to clean, too.
I have some turkey breakfast sausages in the freezer, which have been there a long time. I usually eat them with pancakes or waffles, and haven't been eating those lately. I should and/or just eat them with eggs, etc. Hmm.... guess I'm hungry, so talking about food again.
I've been feeling sort of dizzy yesterday and today. Last night I had what sounded like a pulsating sound in my right ear. It wasn't very loud and I think it's gone now. At first I was scared that it could be something serious, but then figured that it might be related to my TMJ, which hasn't been a problem for quite a while, except after a fall. Oh, dear.... "Getting Old is Not for Sissies".

I don't know how to do internet things on my phone, but learned how to take photos with it and text them. I have a "google phone" on my computer through my gmail account, and I realized it texts so I tried texting some photos to it from my cell phone. It worked, and I wanted to show you this one of the first mini eggplant from the potted plant I have been raising on my balcony.
Yay! It worked, but it's too big and I don't know how to resize it b/c I don't speak "code". I have some more photos of the plant with its new babies on it, but I haven't gotten them off my phone yet and I don't think I want to do it if the images turn out this big. I looked at it in BBCode but didn't know what or how to change. But this will give you an idea of how small and cute they are.
I cooked this one. I cut it in half lengthwise and sauteed it with mushrooms and onions I was already cooking. I hope the "babies" mature enough before the weather gets too cold!

Note that the above picture is not a link, just a picture. Nothing is supposed to happen when you click on it. Does it appear at all? It shows a full-grown teeny mini-eggplant in the palm of my hand. If you can't see that I won't try any more.
If, like me, you've got packages you've been meaning to mail but haven't done it yet, now is the time. Changes are coming this weekend.

OH DARN! I've been meaning to order stamps from the P.O. online but didn't finalize it for several reasons. I thought I had until October until the first class stamp prices were to go up, now I read that they already went up Aug. 29. That means my order is going to cost even more, and one of the reasons I postponed it was to figure out how to narrow it down and not put it on a high VISA month.

I was hoping they'd get rid of DeJoy by now, but looks like his dastardly plans are already going into effect.
