40 MPG with a 1984 Renault Alliance on a trip from Michigan to Midway Airport in Chicago (AND BACK). It was grossly under-powered but gave great mileage.
I eventually replaced it with a small pickup (still with a 4 cylinder engine). On a rural highway that I frequently travel was a spot that first went downhill then uphill. With the Renault I would always lose a lot of speed on the uphill leg. The first time I took my pickup that route, I wondered how much speed it would lose. The pickup kept accelerating uphill.

My 1981 BMW 320i got 37.5 consistently when there was plain gasoline. When we finally parted after 310000miles, it still got 33 on ethanol blend.

A late model Ford Focus rental. It gave 42mpg on the run to Bend OR starting at Redding/Mt Shasta CA - about 350miles. MOstly flat route even though you are going through mountains. Of all the cheap rental cars, I like the Focus alot. It is fun to drive and sips gas. It is tight and confident at high speed. it is plenty roomy enough for me at 6.1" and all my stuff, including an occasional snowboard. Good looking car but interior is cheap and plasticy. The transmissions on older Focus rentals used to constantly downshift unless you locked it out with a button. Ford fixed that annoyance and now they stay in high gear when cruising along.

My brother used to call such vehicles as your Renault Alliance "Rolls Canardlys." They roll down one hill and hardly can make it up the other!

39.90 mpg - 1980 VW Rabbit 32.50 mpg - 1981 VW Pickup 35.65 mpg - 1985 VW Golf 35.98 mpg - 1987 VW GTI 16V 28.88 mpg - 2002 VW Beetle 17.82 mpg - 2012 Toyota Tundra
All of the above mpgs were hand calculated after using an entire tank of fuel. No fancy on-board computers calculating the mpg after a short trip or driving down hill.

The best I've gotten with my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 (318, 5 speed manual, combination city/highway, using gasoline) 19.5 mpg.

Typically in mixed driving it gets around 11.5 but if I reeeeeeaaaaaally baby it on the freeway I can squeeze about 16 out of it.
