Who Knew???March 13th recognizes National K9 Veterans Day and the dedicated K9 units who’ve served since World War II. A lot of things changed after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. We rationed oil, leather, and rubber. The military draft men into service. Women rolled up their sleeves and built war supplies. And dogs were called to duty. During the first world war, the United States took notice of the European use of canines as sentries, message carriers, and several other functions.

The first written use of “OMG” was in a 1917 letter to Winston Churchill from Admiral Lord Fisher of the Royal Navy. The events of that day were so exciting, he wrote, "O.M.G. (Oh! My! God!)." How could Fisher have known that the acronym he invented would go on to become one of the most-used phrases in the world? Here's the letter. Who knew?

Feels like I was robbed an hour of sleep.Flamin' Hot Cheetos were invented by a janitor. Richard Montañez, working at the Frito-Lay plant in Southern California, pitched the idea of adding chili powder to regular Cheetos to the company's CEO. Top brass liked the idea and, since its success, Montañez has risen up the company ranks and now serves as an executive for PepsiCo. Congrats Richard! Who knew?

March 14, 1942 For the first time in history, a dying patient's life is saved by penicillin. Although some claim that the pioneering trials at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, England resulted in the first cures using penicillin, Orvan Hess and John Bumstead are generally credited with the first documented successful treatment.

The largest living organism is an aspen grove in Utah called Pando. Blue whales may be the largest animals on the planet, but they aren’t the largest living organism. The Pando aspen grove is made up of 47,000 identical quaking aspen trees that cover 106 acres of Fishlake National Forest in Utah. The aspen grove is connected by a single shared root system and has been around for thousands of years. Unfortunately, Pando has been shrinking for decades due largely to human intervention and animal grazing. Only time will tell if conservation efforts will make a difference. Who knew?
