Who knew??? March 16th, 1968: "My Lai Massacre". During the Vietnam War, U.S. soldiers dispatched on a search-and-destroy mission killed as many as 500 unarmed villagers in the hamlet of My Lai, considered a stronghold of the Viet Cong. The brutality of the My Lai killings and the official cover-up fueled anti-war sentiment and further divided the United States over the Vietnam War.

Who Knew??? St. Patrick’s Day kicks off a worldwide celebration also known as the Feast of St. Patrick. On March 17th, many will wear green in honor of the Irish and decorate with shamrocks. According to lore, the wearing of the green tradition dates back to a story written about St. Patrick in 1726. St. Patrick (c. AD 385–461) used the shamrock to illustrate the Holy Trinity and worn green clothing. And while the story is unlikely to be true, many will revel in the Irish heritage and eat traditional Irish fare, too.

The first St. Patrick's Day celebration in the United States was held in Boston in 1737. According to the US Census, 31,517,030 US residents claimed Irish ancestry in 2019. In the U.S. St. Patrick's Day is primarily a secular holiday. Most folks claim to be Irish today. Legend has it St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity, by showing an unbeliever the three-leafed plant with one stalk. Shamrocks are the national flower/emblem of Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish national holiday with banks, stores, and businesses closing for the day. Who knew?

Who Knew???
Each year, National Biodiesel Day on March 18th commemorates the birthday of Rudolf Diesel and a few that continue to gain a growing interest across the country and around the world.
Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine and unveiled it at the World Fair in 1900. The engine was originally designed to run on peanut oil, and R. Diesel was a big believer in the role plant oils could play in fueling America.
In a 1912 speech, Diesel said, “…the use of vegetable oils for engine fuels may seem insignificant today, but such oils may become, in the course of time, as important as petroleum and the coal-tar products of the present time.”
Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning, petroleum-free alternative to diesel that can be made from animal fat, vegetable oil, and recycled cooking oil. It is reducing U.S. dependence on imported diesel and creating green jobs as well as improving our environment. Biodiesel is America’s first advanced Biofuel and has become an increasingly popular fuel.

Melting glaciers make a fizzy sound called "bergy seltzer." It occurs when melting water frees tiny bubbles of air that have been trapped under ice for centuries. The sound is so loud that it can be used to determine the distance of icebergs at sea. A blessing at night. Who knew?
