April 4, 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., 39, was shot and killed while standing on a balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee; his slaying was followed by a wave of rioting (Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Chicago were among cities particularly hard hit.) Suspected gunman James Earl Ray later pleaded guilty to assassinating King, then spent the rest of his life claiming he’d been the victim of a setup.

Who Knew???On April 5, The Corn Husker State gains recognition for its wide open spaces and scenic byways.
Nebraska joined the union as the 37th state on March 1, 1867. Pioneers migrating westward along the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails would mark on their journey by the sights they could recognize along the way. One such landmark was Scotts Bluff.
Those who put down roots in Nebraska likely homesteaded thanks to the Homestead Act of 1862. www.nps.gov/home/index.htm
Nebraska’s landscape contributes significantly to the ranching and farming industry still today.

Hitler’s nephew wrote an essay defaming the dictator, then moved to the U.S. and served in the Navy to fight his uncle. William “Willy” Patrick Hitler was born in Liverpool to a British mother and a German father, the half-brother of Adolf Hitler. When Anglo-German relations started heating up due to his uncle’s flamboyance, Willy published an essay in Look magazine entitled “Why I Hate My Uncle.” As war broke out, he moved his family to the United States, where he tried to enlist in the U.S. Navy but was turned down. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Franklin D. Roosevelt took a second look at Willy’s application and finally approved him to engage in the fight against the Nazis. Who knew?

National Tartan Day on April 6th honors the Scottish heritage flowing through the United States.
From its early beginnings, Americans with Scottish ancestry endeavored for freedom as much as any American. It was in their blood.
Surprisingly, of the 13 governors in the newly established United States, nine were Scots. There are 56 signatures on the Declaration of Independence. Some scholars suggest nearly a third of those signers were of Scottish descent.
Not only can we point to the country’s founding fathers, but of the 43 Presidents who have taken office, 33 have been of Scottish descent.

David Bowie helped topple the Berlin Wall. While David Bowie's trio of albums recorded in Berlin are considered among his best work, it's not the only legacy he has in the German city. In 1987, his performance of "Heroes" in front of the Reichstag as part of the Concert for Berlin, was loud enough and close enough to the wall to be heard in East Berlin (where such music was forbidden). It sparked a police crackdown, and, according to The Guardian, "Many of the eyewitnesses claim that the violent police crackdown on the third night of the concerts… were crucial in changing the mood against the state." National No Housework Day directs us to put down the cleaning solution and toss aside the laundry. For one day each year on April 7th, the housework can wait.
Take a break from the sweeping, dusting, and dishes. Dirty windows? They will wait one more day. The vacuum will remain banished to the closet. And mopping? Well, tomorrow it’s a date.
While we don’t have to overlook the obvious necessary sanitary needs, we can leave a few dishes in the sink for the day. If the toys are scattered, leave them. Books cluttering the table? They can stay, too.

Brunch was originally invented to cure hangovers. The favorite meal of millennials was invented in 1895 by an English writer named Frank Beringer, who published an article called “Brunch: a Plea” in Hunter’s Weekly newspaper. In his article, he described an alternative to the traditional Sunday dinner that he dubbed “brunch.” He argued that waking up early was no fun for those who had had wild Saturday nights and that brunch was the perfect place for folks to gather around noon, recount the tales of their wild nights, and enjoy each other’s company.
