Only two national flags have the color purple on them. Those two countries are Dominica, which uses purple in its flag's central image of a sisserou parrot, and Nicaragua, which includes a purple stripe in a rainbow that's featured on the national coat of arms at the center of the flag. Who knew?

Who Knew???Held on the last Saturday in April, National Sense of Smell Day celebrates one of the five senses. Our sense of smell is more than a way to know when dinner is ready. It also plays a role as an early warning system, triggers memories, and interacts with our other senses.
Did you know, scent cells renew every 30-60 days and are the only sense nerve cells that can regenerate. Those scent cells allow us to recognize smells from childhood, triggering memories of Play-doh, grandma’s cookies or pipe smoke. It’s also the only sense directly connected to the brain where all those memories are stored.

There's a shrimp-like creature that makes aluminum armor to protect itself. The pressure of the deep sea (Mariana's Trench) is so intense that it would crush the bodies of any critter not equipped to withstand it. That's why Hirondellea gigas—a small, shrimp-like amphipod—adapted to form a layer of aluminum hydroxide gel to cover its exoskeleton, acting as a kind of pressure-resistant armor, according to 2019 research published in the journal PLoS One.Who knew?

Your dog knows when someone isn't trustworthy. You may be able to tell when your furry BFF is thrilled to see you, but your dog probably knows even more about you and other people than you do about them. Not only do dogs have innate instincts to protect their humans, but a 2015 study published in the journal Animal Cognition suggests that pups can even tell if a person is untrustworthy based on their behavior. On the last Sunday in April, National Pet Parents Day recognizes the pet parents who go the extra mile to care for their fur babies. There is a very special connection, a unique bond, between a pet and its owner. This unique relationship, which can often last for many years, is often a vital part of the ‘pet parents’ life. Their loved pets are considered to be a member of the family.

On April 26, National South Dakota Day recognizes the 40th state to join the union.
The Mount Rushmore State keeps its doors open all year round. After exploring the mountain, visitors can also enjoy Thomas Jefferson‘s vanilla ice cream while gazing at his likeness. And these sculptures are not the only ones South Dakota proudly displays, either. While there are several man-made displays, Wind Cave, the Missouri River, and the badlands remind us that mother nature still carves out her own.

Mount Rushmore cost less than $1 million. Featuring the faces of former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt, Mount Rushmore was designed and supervised by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln Borglum — who took over after his father passed away — sculptured the project between 1927 and 1941. 400 workers begin the monumental task of carving four 60-foot presidential heads out of the granite of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota. While the highly recognizable landmark was a sprawling and complex project, it cost just $989,992.32 to erect — adjusted for inflation, that's about $17 million today. Who knew?
